Usually when they are left handed.
You read my mind.

I don't ask for ambi safety since I'm right handed, and I know and can manipulate a right handed safety with my weak hand. Once I bought a gun that came with ambi safety, I replaced it with a single sided part.

I know the owner of this gun is going to be tickled.

Hello Anthony. That's a logical choice- an ambi safety for a leftie. However, I was curious more as a matter of features and aesthetic concern.

Are 1911s or other pistols like the Rocket more aesthetically pleasing/special with or without the ambi safety? Some folks list ambi safeties as one of the added features on their "loaded" pistol.
My decision of whether or not to include an ambi safety on a pistol that I'm building to sell would be predicated on the pistol's designed purpose. On a small, compact, large caliber self defense handgun, I think you're better off with a single side safety, unless you're a lefty. If you're a lefty, there are several considerations such as maybe reducing the size of the paddle on the left side and adding a stop stud for the right side paddle to stop against. If I were building a full size gun that might double as a match gun on occasion, an ambi safety might get the nod. If I'm building a full-zoot custom with mag well and all the bells & whistles, I'd most likely include an ambi. All of these "for instances" are of course intended if I'm building for me. The client gets it his way.

I appreciate reading all of the insights and techiniques. I'd better stop asking questions now to avoid hijacking this thread about such a fine "pocket rocket." The reason I brought up the issue about the ambi dextrous safety was that on a gem of a pistol like this one whether or not an ambi safety would enhance or detract from the visual appeal. In general I have trouble deciding.

The pocket rocket is fine work and the responses were thought provoking. Best wishes.

To all in this post...

I had the distinct pleasure of holding the "pocket rocket" in my hand today. It is a wonderfully balanced work of art. John's unique skill is to listen to your desires, consult with you on what's typical or best for your application and make it happen.

Holding the pistol allowed me to finalize my decision for a white dot front site insert v. a gold or tritium dot. John is putting ambi safeties on my full-size guns and strong-side only on my pro carry.

The bottom line is he'll do what you ask, but he'll always (gently) guide you in the right direction.

Regards

Robert

The owner saw this thread and envy 10thMtnTech for being able to handle the gun before him. :) Another 5 weeks before he picks it up.

Smooth One...

What a great pistol; you've got an awesome one there to add to your collection. I am truly honored to have been given the opportunity to see that craftsmanship before you pick it up. Enjoy it, as I am certain you will! :D

Regards

Robert

No no no , it's not mine. I wish it was. The owner is a good friend of mine, so I will get to see it when he picks it up. Maybe he'll even let me shoot a magazine through it.

John,

Another great piece. I love John's beveled slide and barrel cuts on the front of the slide.

John only lives a few minutes from my son in the Atlanta area. I have stopped by a couple of times but my check book can't stand regular visits.

It never ceases to amaze me that real gunsmiths will take a frame or a slide and "chop" it or cut it down. Even if you have done it before, it seems so risky to those kinds of big time modifications. I'd be petrified of ending up with scrap metal.

she looks good!
