Well, I am not sure if this qualifies as a custom pistol thread or not but here goes...

I spoke with Drake @ Drake's GunWorks this morning. He is a very nice fellow, very patient and willing to explain everything that I had question about. He will be applying his craftsmanship to my 1911 later this spring.

However, today I shipped my slide, barrel and slide stop from my Kahr CW9 to him for a Melonite treatment. It is a sort of trial run for the treament and I figured that the Kahr would be a great guinea pig!

Anyway, when I get it back, I will include before and after pics.

Just wanted to give kudos to Drake. I am already both impressed and intrigued...I can't wait to see how my 1911 turns out.

I sent my scratched and dinged stainless Dan Wesson off to Drake for melonite, as well as a few other custom touches. It came back looking really rather nice...

Great turnaround and sagely advice as I wasn't really sure of everything I wanted doing.
The melonite looks great, I've put a little over 1000 round through it this past month and there is no sign of wear yet, it really is quite amazing.
In the photo it looks kind of satin black, but it's color seems to change depending on the amount of oil on the surface. I dropped the gun in a degreaser after my last range trip and it came out looking a very, very flat, dark grey. Gave it a quick wipe over with an oily rag and it was a nice deep almost black again.
I plan on getting an old beat up, enamel finished CZ75 out to him soon too.

Wow! That does look great!

I have been a big fan of the CBOB for quite some time, but I could not get past the stainless. (I am not a fan of shiny guns for personal carry, just my opinion....)

Now you have given me ANOTHER idea for Drake in the near future...

FWIW, I spoke with Drake late last week. It turns out that the application process will, obviously, melt the plastic front sight on my Kahr, so he recommended a Heinie front w/ a dot and a dovetail cut. He also suggested a mild carry bevel for some of the sharp edges, so now I am really anxious to see how it finishes...

I have been looking at a P45....imagine what Drake could do with that....

What else can I say??!! The work in this is just awesome. No hard edges, smooth finish, fixed a small bump on the slide ledge, polished the feed ramp and installed a Heinie front sight with a white dot!

The project turned out much better than I had hoped. I can't wait to see what Drake does with my Springer...

I will highly recommend Drake's work to anyone! Thanks, Drake!

Melonite is a fantastic finish. I have it on several guns and it appears to never wear and these guns see hard use. It's a perfect finish here in the Pacific NW. I just received a rare (less than 100 made) 4566 back from S&W, they had dinged up the finish while installing new tritium sites under warranty and tried to blame it on UPS. After speaking with management they agreed to refinish the entire gun in it's original finish, black melonite and they did a very nice job! Unfortunately the gun was lost in the S&W mailroom and was found under a cabinet and when shipping UPS they neglected to put my street # on the package, fortunately it found it's way home!
