IYHO which Springfield Armory pistol is a better platform for a custom build the Mil-Spec or the GI. Is there a difference between the two that makes one better suited for a custom build?
Thanks,
Sam

Sam, it's the same basic gun really. The Mil-Spec does give you a better barrel (one piece stainless vs. a two piece unit), but other than that, the only other things the GI doesn't have is a lowered port, bevelled mag well and high profile sights. If you're going all-out, and the GI is significantly cheaper, that's the way I would lean. Regards,

Personal taste..I'd go with the GI due to the rear slide serrations being straight....never ever really like angled ones. I strip them of all small parts anyway...the only thing left that is SA is the slide and frame

Thanks guys, I agree I also like the straight rear slide serrations on the GI but I also like the Springfield Armory emblem on the Mil-Spec, go figure :?

For a basis for a custom job, it's down to the exterior appearance - serrations and roll marks. Either pistol is likely to take a lot of work to have polished flats. The only added feature on the Mil-Spec likely to be used as-is, is the ejection port. Everything else will likely be worked over, erasing the added features of the Mil-Spec.

So if you're up in the air about which exterior you like best, just consider if the cost difference is worth a lowered & fluted ejection port.

Thanks for your input John you raise a very good point. Do you guys think one of the new series 70 Colts (I've got one of those) is a better platform for a full house build than a Springfield Armory gun?
Thanks,
Sam

Sam, Personally, though I love Colts heritage and history (as well as the rollmarks), the price difference and the rather spotty quality of the Colts means to me that, I'd have to see the individual example of the Colt before making that decision.

Thanks Don, any suggestions what should I be looking for as I inspect my Colt?

Sam, The main problems are shallow rollmarks on the slide, and sometimes atrocious frame to slide fit. Ted had one awhile back with .017 worth of frame to slide play. Too much for anything but welding up the frame and re-cutting or Acc U Rails. Good Luck,

Thanks Don, that's why I was originally asking about Springfield's in this thread, I'll have to take a close look at my Colt next time I open the safe. But then there is always my Caspian slide and bar stock receiver that I've had tucked away in there for quite a while
Thanks again,
Sam
