As of now, I have put about 1000 rounds through a new Series 70 that Jim Hoag worked on. It is perfectly smooth and reliable. Mr. Hoag installed a Kart barrel, a trigger job, extended thumb safety, installed one of his own beavertails, and subtly de-horned the gun. I added a pair of Herret's stocks that nestle the plunger tube and extend to the rear strap. The gun sits in a Rick Bachman Old West Reproductions "Tanker" style holster with stamped tooling. Besides using this post to shamelessly brag about what I think is a really cool gun, I would like to address the issue of finishing. The original finish is wearing fast from holstering and me pawing at it. Should I let it simply mellow into a patina of a well loved pistol, or is a polished blue finish order? I know a lot of this is upto personal taste, but I would like to know what people think. Who is the one to do the finishing, and what of color (black, historic finishes, fire blue small parts etc.)? Thanks for your ideas, Gabe.

For that nice a gun, I would look at some other finishes. If you want a black gun, in my limited experience, I would look at melonite.

Oh, and please post some pictures ! I have spoken with Mr. Hoag in the past, and he is always a gentleman.

Refinish an instant classic??? Not THIS Cowboy!! I'd let that nice blue finish fade into a well worn piece of classic art. This week's new Super-Duper-Ultima-'written about in ALL the gun rags'-scientific finish on a classic like that is like touching up the Mona Lisa with some Rustoleum to "keep her looking new"!!!
Just one Redneck's opinion with a few classics of his own.

How about some pics!!!! 8)
