You should be able to apply these types of finishes on any substrate that is not affected by the process temperature (150C to 750C depending on the coating and process used). I would call and ask the vendor, they will be the ones who have to make peace with it.

Might not be the best idea though, depending on the hardness of the frame. If not hard enough, it will crack on the surface during use, leading to flaking.

Mr. Riehl,
Thank you for the input. My gunsmith has continually sent emails and tried to call them, but they haven't even responded to numerous attempts. Kind of makes me worry about sending them a firearm!! If we get no response(s) at this stage, what will it be when they have my firearm???
Thank you again for the post.
Best regards,
Jeffro

Its actually Dr Riehl. I didnt go throug 8 years of evil engineering school just to be..... :D :D :D

These types of coatings have their place, just not on my guns :D For my guns, I prefer traditional bluing, chrome, or painted melonite. No aluminum or titanium, please.

By the way, DLC is a very common finish. There are many, many shops that can do this very well. The trouble would come from the need for and FFL to ship. Might want to call and ask some vendors (I suggest ThomasNet.com or Macraesbluebook.com and search for diamond like carbon). In this tight R&D funding world, I cant imagine someone turning down easy work. Good luck!

Dr. Riehl,
My humble apologies for incorrectly addressing you. No disrespect intended......just wasn't aware.
Thank you for the additional feedback. It will prove helpful.
Best regards,
Jeffro

No problem. Ment as a joke. :P

I typically only pull this stunt when someone (like myself) is being a big a-hole.

By the way, there should be bunches of local shops in St. Louis that can do DLC very well what with Mc. Don's/Boeing there. I'd look for a local shop.

Sorry I was an a-hole. Just cant resist sometimes....

Absolutely no problem........ I am not "thin-skinned". Apology totally unnecessary but appreciated..... you are a gentleman. However, I unfortunately have not found anyone who does DLC in St. Louis area :( :(
Best regards,
Jeffro

My suggestion, talk to these guys. I looked, and couldnt find anyone in Missouri that would do the work. :? :?

I have used them in the past (not with guns though). I would call them Monday, and explain you desired coating and see if they have any other coatings that meet you color and durability requirements. Such as TiC. It might provide better adhesion to your Ti frame.

Unfortunately, they are in Maine.

Well, I am now 748 rounds into my Burton gun with Ion Bond and carrying it every day here in the AZ heat. The wear is amazingly light. The only wear points are where there is DLC to DLC contact like frame rails and slide stop. A good number or holster presentations and you can not see even a hint of holster wear.

The real good news is: not even a HINT of corrosion. I can rust a blued gun by looking at it. I rust the right side of my blued sights (the side AWAY from the body) after a day of wear. So, even with my freakish sweat, this has held up. I am going to take extensive photos every 3000 rounds to chronicle the wear. However, so far anyway, this does indeed look to be the uberfinish.

Big Brown (UPS) brought one to me today from Ion Bond.

Ya know, it's so distressing to put weeks into a gun and send it out to be refinished, and have it come back all.... messed up.

Not, not, NOT the case with Ion Bond.

It would be hard to be more pleased with what they sent. In terms of how they cared for it in packaging, and the quality of the finish they put on this stainless 1911, I am one happy camper..... more later in another post.

To echo Ned's remarks, I am likewise head-over-heels happy with IonBond's service. I recently got two guns back from them, and was thrilled to see how well it was packaged. Each of 6 magazine tubes were individually bagged and every last pin was accounted for. The guns came back exactly as they were sent, but well, black. Ryan Flynn was a pleasure to work with, and I am equally impressed with the coating.

I, too, have just taken delivery of a project gun that I'd sent to IonBond. Marvelous work. I'll echo what Ned and Dave said about Ryan Flynn's quality of workmanship and packaging. His work rectified a multitude of sins committed by a Rancho Cordoba "gunsmith".

I took a "chance" and had the firing parts (hammer, sear, disconnector, etc.) coated, and they came back feeling exactly as I'd sent them. Trigger pull is exactly the same according to my scale; feel is just as clean and crisp as it was when I sent it.

Ryan Flynn was always on top of our correspondence and a pleasure to deal with. I can't say enough good about IonBond's performance.

Hey man, what is with all the unecessary animosity around here? Does 5 Shot John need a hug? The grind of the leather business starting to get to ya? It happens man. I have to say though Ted and Jason are a-holes, so I guess we belong together.

Adios.

OK, several folks have posted something like this, so that is good news. This is an old thread, but my thanks to all for the information. It is appreciated.
