Well, a customer who attended a home range class in June decided that his duty gun, a Springfield MC Operator, needed some upgrades so we talked with him and got this project underway. Nothing too extensive or special, just a few upgrades to make the gun a little more fit for duty.

We left the factory barrel and slide to frame fit, they were both fine for a duty gun. The front and back strap were checkered at 30lpi, S&A magwell, new sights, several internal upgrades including new hammer, sear, disconnector, sear spring, barrel bushing, etc. Serrate the rear of the slide, and refinish the whole thing in Superblack.

The front strap was machine checkered by Randy Lee at Apex Tactical. The MS Housing was my very first attempt at hand checkering.

Enjoy the pics... (and please excuse the grease :) )

Bruce was/is probably the best hand checkering guy around-why machine checkering, did Bruce hang up his checkering files? Nice gun.

The multiple reconstructive surgeries to fix the repetitive stress injuries from hand checkering (and the several years of recovery from the surgeries) means that Bruce saves his hand checkering for only the most high end custom builds.
Hand checkering offers very little real practical benefit over machine checkering other than the prestige of having it so for this type of duty gun upgrade job, where it is not even a complete custom build, it probably would have been a little out of place.

We refer to the finish as Superblack, it is a salt bath nitride finish very similar to the more commonly known Melonite.
