About 3 years ago I started looking for the right candidate to have engraved. I wanted a Colt Series 70 but I didn't want to pay the outragous prices that they were bringing. I decided I would look around and eventually the right candidate would emerge. Well when it emerged it was actually part of a 2 Series 70 package that I got a deal on. It was worn, the roll marks were almost gone and it looked terrible but it was a shooter.
The purchase was made and it was dropped of at the gunsmith last year for his work and then it would go to the engraver. Anyway the roll marks were recut by Bill Adair in the larger size that I prefer, everything on the inside was replaced and the surface was prepped for engraving. Off it went to Granbury Texas for a little Texas scratching and the wait was never ending it seemed. In the interim I ordered some Ivory grips from Spresser Knifeworks and waited and waited and waited. On Thursday afternoon I was called that it was ready, needless to say it wasn't a good time I had plans. Well after I worked everything out I called and asked what time the smith was going to bed and off I went to a little town north of Dallas to pick it up. When I arrived and saw it I was in awe. The smith and engraver had perfectly executed what I wanted. Even today I am in awe that they were able to accomplish this.
While the smith that did the work isn't a well known smith, the work is flawless. About the only thing left of that original Series 70 is the frame and slide. In true Texas tradition I plan on shooting and carrying this pistol, while not all the time it will get used. Needless to say my pictures dont do the work justice but I am glad I waited for the right pistol to come along, remember patience is a virtue..
