This Springfield was recently completed as a joint effort between Chuck Rogers and me. Its purpose was to help fund LTW's presence at the SHOT and NRA Shows...... not an inexpensive endeavor. It sold at just under $6K, not a bad deal for the taker since, while Chuck and I work well together, we have never done it except for one other "revenue gun" a couple years ago. But the good news is that another such rev gun, a collaboration between Don Williams and John Harrison, will be available in the next few weeks. I don't have any more info on that one; anyone interested in snapping that one up, I'd say contact John or Don....

Chuck's part on this was everything from the rails down, I took rails up. Chuck provided, fitted, and modified the following parts on the lower end:
Wilson magazine catch, Brown hardcore slide stop, Wolff recoil spring, Wilson hammer, Wilson sear, Colt disconnector, EGW thumb safety, S&A grip safety, Davidson grips, Greider trigger. Chuck's trigger work is always exemplary and this one was a perfectly crisp 3.75 pounds.

For my part, I used a match barrel generously provided by Springfield. Their stainless barrels have been among the best for a long time-- this one is a new configuration, not available as an aftermarket part, but as Springfield has from the start been a big supporter of LTW's mission, one sortof, ah, slipped out with my address on it. I shot a group that made me feel like MAYBE I still "have it", using Asym's 185 JHP target load at 775 FPS.... just over an inch at 28 yards. And, in the interest of honestly and full disclosure, no, I was not able to subsequently duplicate it (but close!). Other parts as noted with the pics. I finished it with manganese phosphate and Brownell's Baking Laquer.

Overall left side:

Chuck's excellent Golfballs abound on this one. I think it's the best self-cleaning traction treatment going:

Golfballs, a little closer. This one also shows Chuck's signature dehorning..... tried my best to emulate it on the top end:

Part of my part: Shield Driver sights. Why is it that lint and water drops can't be seen in real life but they jump out at you in pictures?
Image

Shield Driver rear sight and matched, textured slide rear.... EGW extended ejector.

The front end-- an EGW stainless 80% bushing that I have bored, then angle-rebored to fit the Springfield match barrel.... also has my sculpted, angled front face:

I should mention that the base gun was donated by another gun industry luminary, LTW supporter and good friend, Patrick Sweeney. He won it at the Single Stack Nationals. You know how when you're driving through a mountain pass, they have those signs that say "Caution! Falling Rocks"? At Sweeney's house it says, "Caution! Falling 1911's". This one slid down the mountainside so he sent it over. Thanks Patrick!

Man, that is one sweet pistol. The collaboration between the two of you is flawless.
The work compliments the other nicely. Man I am one lucky man to be in a generation that can look up to you guys. Pure sweetness!!!

Shrimp and grits?

Dibs on being the grits.......

Something else about Chuck's work that always impresses me..... the efforts on the thumb safety. This thing's safety has the equivalent of a Rogers trigger job on it-- so crisp and positive, no bounce-back, no "creep"..... I'll bet the new owner spends the first few days just sitting there savoring that perfect click up, click down......

Ned,
Fantastic job on the top end!

Patrick,
Thank you for your most generous contribution to keeping LTW afloat.

XX,
Thank you for purchasing this build, sight unseen. I trust it will serve
you well.

I'm almost ashamed to think about how much time I put into a thumb safety fit.
I'm sure that many would judge me insane/incompetent/snail slow if
they knew.

Thanks, Mark.

Chuck, I feel your pain on safety efforts. I added one of my ESPT's (Extra Stout Plunger Tube), and was sweating that changing that one part of the equation would bollix it up and leave me trying to replicate its "as received" efforts, but nope. So dang many subtle little things come into play. The good news folks is that once it's right, it stays right.

With the gracious permission of the new owner of this pistol, it will be part of the display at LTW's SHOT booth.

I'd like to point out a couple other Chuck mods on this gun that are typical Chuck. They a re buried in the gun pretty much..... I know these are standard for Chuck but you don't hear much about them.

The grip safety is fitted flawlessly-- and when you do that, a little slop really shows. Chuck took some of the side-to-side wobble out of it for a more precise movement and no-rattle installation.

What stops the downward movement of the thumb safety is the lug of it that protrudes into the frame and blocks the sear. When you move the safety down, a sharpish edge of this lug contacts the window in the frame through which it protrudes. Chuck built up this sharp edge so it has more contact area-- otherwise the sharp edge puts a little divot in the edge of the window, which can turn into and outwardly-projecting burr. It's the little things!

Also-- I want to make sure everyone is aware that the raffle for LTW #8 is up and running. There is a sticky on it, but after a while sometimes, stickies start to just become part of the background scenery. Here's a link to that sticky (top-most in Custom Pistols):
http://www.louderthanwords.us/forum/vie ... f=6&t=8518
Let's make something big happen this year! Just follow these easy steps:
1. Getcher credit card out
2. Follow the links in the post to NSWF's site, buy a ticket or tickets
3. Feel good about helping some wounded Naval Special Warfare guys that are watching the perimeter for us, and the families of the fallen ones.

Direct link to the ticket-buyin' page:
https://www.givedirect.org/give/givefrm.asp?CID=4730

We can't all be out there in the fight-- but we can still take an important part by showing we care about the guys and gals that are.

AWESOME JOB Chuck and Ned. You've done us all proud.

Ned I'm glad you pointed out some of the finer details of Chuck's work. These things aren't apparent in pretty pictures, but Rogers owners, and those of us in the know, realize the amount of insane detail that go into a Rogers pistol. Some of the rarest craftsmanship on the planet.

Of course the same can be said for a Ned pistol!

And Patrick, no matter what Ned says about you in private, I think you're all right. THANKS so much for your generous contribution!

Ned talks about me? And this, after he signed the non-disclosure agreement, in blood too.

This is one fine piece of work. I know I will see more of work like this at Shot. I am very, very lucky to have a Roger Piece that I very much enjoy, (Yes it is a keeper) and it is pushing about 2K out of it.

Collaborations are the best of many worlds. Wow.

Again, a very, fine piece of work.
