Kind of looks out place with all the sexy high speed 1911's and BHP's normally shown here. But this was the gun that started my lusting after custom pistols 30+ years ago. When I was a young patrolman I wanted a Behlert chopped down model 39. In the days before the 3913 and other compact autos there wasnt many options if you wanted a compact in 9mm Luger. On $850 a month with wife and child it was all I could do to afford a used Model 39-2 ($150 for my first one) let alone the addional $300 to have Behlert chop it. Found this one on GB and struck a deal with the owner.

Hey Gary:
That is very cool!! Sometime after I started on Patrol in the early/mid 70's I bought a S&W 39 for a total Police price of $95. My gross pay was $600/month and although I wanted to have a ASP conversion done on it, the $400 conversion (IIRC) price kept me from getting it done. I can't bitch too much though because my department allowed me to carry my old 1911 (that my Dad carried in the South Pacific in WWII) when nearly every other cop out there had to carry their department issued reveolver. :D

Within the past 10 years or so, a friend sent me a Devel conversion to build him a holster. I was struck by how relatively rough the double action was compared to current standards. I still would have bought it though if he'd have wanted to part with it. :D

Neat piece of history you have there!
