Good day fellow 1911 lovers. I have a few 1911's in 45ACP.
What are the pros and cons involving the38 super round? I have a lot of respect for the members here, and I would appreciate any input you all would care to share.
Thank you VERY much.

Unless you reload, it's a pretty expensive round and can be hard to find (especially so the last two or three years). That being said, I have two pistols in the caliber. One was built many years ago as a "racegun" by Wilson when hi-cap STI frames were brand new--STI frame with a Colt 38 super slide, Wilson barrel and small parts. This has been a great gun and was used by my wife for a few years in IDPA/USPSA shooting. A few years ago I put a 9mm barrel in the pistol for less expensive shooting and it continues to function flawlessly.

I also have an early 1950's Colt Commander (aluminum frame) 38 Super which was modified by one of the LTW gunsmiths (John Harrison)--it needed Acc-U-Rails, a ramped barrel, some better retro sights. It is an excellent pistol and I carry it occasionally with Winchester SuperX ammo (when I'm not carrying a pistol in .45 caliber).

I've been very happy with the caliber. Recoil, perceived or otherwise, seems less than .45.

Hope this helps,

Rob

If you do decide to get into reloading for the .38 Super, you'll find it is about as easy to load for as .38 Special and .45 ACP.

The case is straight, built strong, it uses 9mm bullets, and the list of useful and appropriate powders is long.

I have a bin of Super I used when I was shooting in Open, and even back in the days when Major was higher, I could get enough loadings out of them to wear the nickel off, and obscure the headstamp from ejector dings.

I lost more by failing to find them at the range, than I did from cracked mouths or loose primer pockets.

Thank you very much, Mr. Sweeney. If I move forward with this caliber, I will probably reload for it.
