Of all the pieces I have seen on this site, I have yet to see any with acc-u-rails. What are your thoughts on this seemingly "rare" modification? I haven't really found much articles on it. So far there have been three choices of frame/slide fitting.

1. Peening the rails
2. Fitting and lapping oversized slide and/or frame rails
3. Acc-u-rails

Are acc-u-rails solely for rattle guns with loose fitting rails or would someone actually use it in a full-house custom?

Tim Brian had a full house custom at the Shot Show with accu-rails and it was absolutely beautiful.

I have rails on two of my IPSC guns. They make the slide feel like it's on glass rails and there is no slop or binding at all. I have many, many thousands of rounds through these pistols and I have never had a problem. I know several others that have them as well with the same results.

I would still rather have choice #2. Fitting and lapping oversized slide and/or frame rails. Although I have never had a problem, I would choose #2 because of less parts (murphy's law) on the gun and cheaper costs if building new.

Twong, Another choice - weld up the existing frame rails and re-machine them. I've had good luck with this as well. Sometimes there's more play than I'm comfortable with to squeeze and peen.

Thanks for the info. I'm glad there's not much negative thoughts on it. When I was deciding my custom, I pretty much went straight down CT's to do list and chose everything. LOL!!! I wanted every bell and whistle on it, and I wanted the slide/frame fit to be so tight and smooth, it would feel like it's one piece yet glide as if it was on air. I love and admire perfection, and I definitely chose a great smith to do that. CT, thanks for another teaser. :) Do you know I have that as my wallpaper on my computer right now? I guess I'll have to wait and see for myself in real life..

tweetbb, I'm envious that you had a chance to see it before I did.

That, my friend, is what happens when you live in a city with laws such as yours. My sympathies.

They do make a gun smooth and shake-free like nuthin' else, that's for sure. Some folks kinda turn their noses up at Accu-Rails, especially in the hard-use context...... I agree with that to a point. If I were wheelin' a 1911 through the Khyber Pass or something, and was going to be out for a while, I'd rather not have them in the gun. A full-blown race gun, sure. Everything in between is up to the individual and his own philosophy on cleaning and maintenance, and dependent upon his likes/dislikes and accuracy requirements. Let's just say I wouldn't tease a guy for having them nor for having a rattling gun-- everybody gets to pick their own priorities, ain't it great!

You guys know just what it takes to push me over the edge... :D I have a Lightweight Commander here that the slide will touch the inside of the dust cover on both sides, while in lockup :( ... and was on the edge about Accurails but.. I think its gonna get a set. Big question... is who does them, anyone here at LTW (which would be great!) or who do you guys recommend for it, if not youselves/ each other. :D

Last I heard, it's a patented process, though that patent has probably long expired.

At any rate, I've always sent the frame/slides that I'm building to the man that invented the 'Rail Job' - Bob Kreiger.

Heck, I've sent so many of them to Bob over the years, I think I can remember his address & phone. Let me try here,

The couple I've had done I sent to Bob, He does have some other guys around the country licensed to do it. Turnaround was not bad at all. I'd say for a loosey-goosey aluminum framed gun it's a good way to go.
