I'm with Ned and Dave Both. I think it has a rats butt to do with reliability or accuracy, and like Ned have never been able to show a difference with either configuration in a 5" gun....and that face poker thing got me thinkin about a point (literally!). my plan was always to run if ran out of ammo up that close...As I mature, I think now about a different plan....THWACK..then run...the Question then becomes, do I leave the face poker with gun attached?....or shall we design the latest in back up tools...us mil spec flgr-DETACHABLE....I'll be chucklin for a week at that picture...seriously though...like'em,use'em...don't..then dont....face poker...lol

This is a tough subject because it has been talked to death ever since I have had a computer on the Overload Info Internet. At least I understand the question now!
I take a GI set up apart just like you have described. It is quick and easy and most smiths do it this way. However, if I am taking a gun apart with a guide rod in it, I start by turning the bushing out, then the recoil spring plug and then the spring. I go to the slide stop next and get the slide off and we are off to see the Wizard. If it is a two piece, then I start by getting that front part out and it becomes a GI system. If it has a hateful collet busing in it I move the slide back an inch and get it apart the easy way.
I have never had a problem turning out a tight bushing. I have never had one loosen up with normal wear and tear. I like tight guns and I like them to only move the way I want them to. I used to do the final fit using the "Captain Eagle Smear Fit" by using a big King bushing wrench and JB bore compound.
I do not think that guide rods do much of anything except "wag their tail and make the baby laugh" but I am not one of the Old School guys that think that we can't improve on JMB's original design. I agree that the basic design was genius, but many of us have made it better.

Hey! You could poke your eye out with that thing!

I see no benefit to the FLGR but then again I use them in several of my guns. I found a slightly different version that I got from Dawson Precision. They offer a tool less full length guide rod. Now i don't need to mess with a spring or flying parts when I take my guns down for cleaning.

I am torn between the two of them! Shoot it empty and then poke their eye out. I bet Clint Smith has a new course set up for that as we speak! Before we poke their eye out, let's give them a dose of Surefire, so they never see it coming! You de man!

Oh No? Wait 'til next weeks thread about shok-buffs and grip screws!  We'll show you serious then, Mister! :?

Thanks to the first pic of the poker, I now have a use for the 5 gallon bucket full of plumb bobs that I bought at the last yard sale. Now to think of a really "tactical" name for it.................. 8)

Just for the sake of argument. I compare the flgr to vitamins they arent going to make you perform your best but they surely dont hurt anything! no really I have a caspian/springer that recoils totally different with one installed. I have the old cmc 1 piece. It seems to make the gun recoil more like a piston action than a twisting recoil hard to explain. It also seems to cycle smoother. Other than that it adds enough weight to balance the gun better for me but I own a commander that doesnt have one and it is my go to war gun. Geez if you like em keep em next we'll be disputing the front cocking serration thing!!!

...You know...as I reread this post I cant help but relate this to motorcycles and cars-both of which I have been involved with on a semi-serious level. Between IPSC, Grand American Roadracing, and AMA Superbike..You could interchange certain words in any pit wall or range bench and have the same conversations..its what I love about these types of conversations. Although hairs get split it does stimulate the mind and keep these sports/hobbies/art moving forward. Just a simple observation, as I giggle about the iBOB(facepoker)

I don't have a favorite one way or the other. Some of my 1911s have a FLGR and some have the G.I. setup. I generally just stick with the setup that came from the smith/manufacturer.

Through my previous employment, and all the pistols that I have worked on through current, and owning 2 custom 1911's of my own with 2 piece full lenght guide rods in them. I have had 0 faliures on loosening up. I have a .45 and a .38 Super Race Gun that are equipped with them and never had a hiccup or a hitch with them.

Just my .02....

Thanks,
Bob
