Our gun club still has winter BE competitions (well at least some form of it) at the indoor range. Never have competed though, they like to hold the nightly shoot on a wednesday which I work every other one. If I could just get them to switch it to a tuesday I'd be all set. Fat chance of that happening though.

Its definitely a different skill for the BE competition...and a different gun to say the least.

I really like BE guns and early ones really get me going, so I thought I'd post a couple of pics of a pair of late 60's Giles wadguns I own. A .38 special conversion and a .45 complete with original test targets and letters of correspondence to the original owner.
These are old school by todays standards, but first rate work none the less. Peened rails, squeezed slides, welded bbl's, and bushings that were bored and sleeved. Both of these feature Giles' heavy extended ribs and adjustable sights. They also feature an oversize slide stop pin and the frame was fitted with a hardened bushing for the oversize pin to ride in.
Sorry for the lousy pics. I'll try to get better ones up.

I found a Giles in 45 with extended rib at my local gun shop. I have it on layaway now. Was 800 decent price? It's in good shape, just a bit dirty.
The trigger seems silly light compared to my Baer, but is the sweetest trigger I have felt. The slide moves smooth as glass with no play. It's built on a 1969 Colt. I would like to swap out the rail for a scope mount some day. Does the Marvel rail have the same hole pattern? I see you can get new Clark guns with an optic rail, but they don't sell just the rail.

I collect "classic" bullseye guns also. Based on what I have handled, Giles was the best of the times. I have 2 Giles guns a .38 and a .45 built on a 70 series Colt. My .45 is the same package as yours and is incredibly well executed. His work stands up well today. The groups he got from welded and refit Colt barrels are amazing. His slides to frame job feels like accurails its so good.

I will post some more info on my blog about Giles down the road.

Thanks. Look forward to increasing my knowledge. I think I found a new addiction.

I believe this is my first post on your forum even though I've been reading it for over a year now. This topic caught my attention. I just started shooting bullseye this year. Always looked like a ridiculously boring game. It's kind of like a non-golfer watching golf on TV. Until you actually do it your opinion really isn't accurate (no pun intended). As mentioned earlier it's a great way to learn trigger control and sight alignment. I shot my first 99 on a timed fire target a couple weeks ago and am looking forward to the first 100 yet this winter.

I had a custom carry 1911 built this last year that is my BE gun for a couple more months. The builder was Neil Keller from Kustom Ballistics out of Decatur, IN. That gun will put 10 shots into an inch @ 25 yards from a sandbagged rest.

If I wasn't already having Dave Salyer build a wad gun for me I'd be more than happy to let CT put off his other customers to help a new BE shooter out!

Bullseye was my intro to the shooting sports when I got out of the service back in the '80s. It was the oddest combination of frustration and joy I have ever experienced! I too had a few guns that insisted on shooting way better in practice than in competition! I always just figured that it was the 'smith's fault!
