I've got an 80 series Colt that has 20lpi checkering that runs all the way to the bottom of the frame. The smith that checkered it did a great job on the checkering but he had to cut a small 1/4 moon out on top of the magazine base plate notch in the frame because it was so thin. He left the sides of the notch intact so when the mag is inserted it stops against the sides. As long as standard mags are used, I don't think there will be any long term problems, but the Wilson 10rd mag's over travel stop impacts the frame where it is thin. I've not measured the thickness in this area but it is thin. So my question is, If it took the 20lpi checkering is it ok or will this area eventually cause problems?

It might want to crack eventually, but not from the mags so much as just being thin and the vibes coming from recoil.

If you get the aluminum mag bases for your W/R mags, the stop surface does not have that step and for my money they are a better way to go.

Thanks for the reply Ned. I guess if it eventually cracks I could have a Heinie magwell put on.

Yes, good solution. Actually, one that is silver-soldered on would be primo if further cracking were a concern. It would tend to strengthen the area greatly.
