Anyone have experience with one of these. I am reworking an older 1911 and thought I would try one. Brownells has them in their catalog.

Greetings,
Whether an AFTEC is necessary is still being debated. I use them on my 10mm guns as a preventative measure for broken hooks, though others use them for their ability to retain consistant tension on the brass' rim. They've proven themselves satisfactory in over 5,000 rounds per gun in my case.

YMMV

Denny, I've used only 2, at a customers request on 10MM guns. They seem to be working fine thus far, and this guy shoots quite a bit. The only drawback I see is they're a bit pricey, and I've never had any major problems with the standard 1911 style extractors (providing they're of good quality). I wouldn't bother on a personal gun, but for a guy who's shooting LOTS of high pressure Super or 10MM/40 loads out of an unlimited type gun, they may be the ticket.

I have an STI Executive which I've put about 10,000 flawless rounds through in the past year for USPSA and just recently discovered that it has an AFTEC in it (as I hadn't fully disassembled the slide until recently). I've never had a problem with standard extractors, but I am also now a faithful AFTEC follower and would have no reservations about putting one in another gun. It was still functioning perfectly even though it was caked with carbon and sludge in the extractor tube. YMMV
