Austin, my Dad had one ordered for $17.50 when JFK was assassinated...... right after that, the whole mail order thing went down the tubes since Oswald had gotten his Carcano mail order. He never got it. Even at the time I thought it was odd that Dad would order a .45, I knew it wasn't his kind of gun. We had and used guns but anything like that was a "man gun" to him, for use on people and with no sporting value. He'd worked at Saginaw Steering gear during the war making M1 carbines and M1919 Brownings and had no interest in military or self defense guns.

When Mom and Dad found a 1911 and Mauser HsC in my room at age 18 they were pretty distressed. Holy smokes if they'da found the AR15!

The great thing is that these days they are completely cool with my occupation, and Dad has come around to my way of thinking regarding being armed for self defense. Then a little incident of a screaming, panicked naked lady at the door one night led to his being intersted in something more portable than the K-frame he's had for years, so for his 87th birthday I gave him a S&W five-shot snubby. We both feel better with him having it handy.

Ned, thats a good story about your Dad. In those days Id never have thought GI 45s would disapear so fast at 35.00. I knew of a dealer in Pa who had a wall full of 45s hanging on dowels for 35.00 each. I would buy 3 or 4 and I remember stopping in a few months later and they were all gone. My biggest blunder was at one time a woman came in the shop early 50s and unwrapped a 45 bright Colt blue in a canvas holster with 2 extra clips. Serial no was C907 the ammo in the mags were marked 1911. She wanted to get it out of the house for 25.00 and I grabbed it. It was the old Colt royal blue and how it stayed so pristine in the canvass holster is a mystery. I sold it a year or so later for 300.00 and have been kicking my butt ever since. That no had to have been made the first year. This is only one of the many mistakes Ive made selling altho my wife never pushed me to do so.

Dave,

Far be it from me to correct you, but I THINK you missed a couple of zeros and put the decimal in the wrong place.

Hey, I offered the guy a chance to triple his investment. Isn't that fair?
