Just curious if this is a difficult thing for 'smiths to fix or not. Sometimes you come across a nice old Colt but has pitting and was wondering if this is a deal killer.

hoser, It really depends on where and how bad. Slight pitting on the order od .001 - .002 deep is fairly easily polished out, but when the pitting is deeper, and located for instance in the areas of the slide rollmarks, it's tougher to deal with and is a "I won't know till I look at it"
situation. If it's on the flats of the slides, it can always be surface ground away, but you'll likely lose all or some of the rollmarks as well. Also, it can be a bit tougher if it's on the radius lines, such as where the flats meet radiused areas.

Don, Ive had pretty good luck with removing some pitting on the radius of the slide. O a vertical belt sander being sure the table is 90 degrees with the belt. Take the slide on end and rotate it around the radius, stopping just before the line of the side. As you rotate it you can push abit harder on the top or bottome end and come out with a real good job. Ive also used this method with a new comp in place to match it with the slide contour. A little practice and you can get good at it. Ive done many, many slides this way.
