I've read that a conversion from 40 S&W to 9MM is possible with a BarSto barrel. Has anyone here actually made this conversion? If so, what was the outcome. Any particular problems with this conversion. I understand this conversion will stand up alot better over the long haul, and allow the use of +P ammo. Any breach face issues? Your thought's and experience's are appreciated.

It's probably possible to put a high performance Cadillac V6 in a city bus. It would sound great, and probably get a 5 star crash rating but I wouldn't have one shoved up my

The one thing that makes the .40 high power feel the most *"unhighpowerly"* is the huge slide necessary to balance the recoil of the .40 and keep the gun from shooting itself to pieces. That heavy slide ruins the feel and balance of an otherwise near perfect pistol.

A far better solution is to get a 9mm top end and have it fit to your .40 lower. All that's necessary is to machine the ejector slot in the slide to clear the wider ejector in the .40 frame. It'll feel like a real 9mm Hi-Power.

* I'm a honcho here. I'm allowed to make up words

"unhighpowerly", i like the word but must disagree as i kind of prefer the balance and feel of the 40 cal version. on the other hand though, if your going to have it in 9mm you may as well have the slimmer slide. if worried about the abuse to the pistol alot of people step up to an 18.5# recoil spring. then again if you really desire a 9mm projectile with the forty's heavier slide , the 357 sig is another option. 8)

Hmmm....a Yost BHP with barrels for .40 and .357??

Apparently I need to start shopping for a .40 BHP...

One day, my wife is going to figure out how to open the safe and I'll be a dead-man...

Oh, what horrible heresy! A .40 BHP feeling better than a 9mm hi-power?!?!? You must have some terrible physical deformity or mental imbalance that causes such feelings or thoughts. :?

I am so sorry. :(

Maybe, with some sort of therapy, you might get better...

I did do one of the 40 to 9 conversions for a local dude about a year ago. He seems to like that sort of stuff. At any rate, the barrel fit was no problem, and though the breech face is wider, the barrel holds it centered so the extra .015 per side of clearance wasn't an issue. The extractor does have to be adjusted to pivot in a bit more to reliably extract the smaller case, but that's easy. You would have to use a lighter recoil spring of course owing both to the lighter recoil of the 9MM, and the extra weight of the 40 slide. While you may be able to use the 40 mags, I'd suggest the 9MM mags for reliability's sake. Hope this helps,

So is this a good idea, to add the 18.5# spring?

Troy, One of the things that delays the slide unlocking is the hammer being cocked by the slide. It's fairly common to use a lighter hammer spring when doing trigger work on a HP, so this can be offset to some extent by a heavier recoil spring. I wouldn't worry about it too much, unless you're shooting a lot of hotter loads. If so, it's easy to stick the heavier recoil spring in.

Not shooting hot loads....I just replaced the springs in some of my 1911's with wolff springs and it makes a huge difference returning the slide to battery!

Also, I have been dreaming about that BHP...Is this normal?

Me too!

Since I've joined this forum, I've been dreaming about a lotta stuff. The other morning my wife said I was mumbling about "french borders" in my sleep.

I totally agree with Ted the graceful lines and balance are gone in the 40
I have owned a couple of 40s now all my BHP's are 9mms.
