A number of years ago, I had a Clark "Meltdown" gun with the big bushing. In a fit of utter stupidity, I had attempted to checker the frontstrap on a pistol myself. To date, I have no idea what I was thinking. At any rate... I sent the gun down to Clark's and had them do their thing on it.

Since I quickly figured out that I had screwed things up badly, I stoped before I got too deep on the frontstrap, and their Meltdown erased all my efforts. The best way to describe the feel of the gun afterwords, was what Sheriff Jim Wilson called a "well worn bar of soap". To be honest, I really hated it. It completely destroys the classic lines of a 1911. I sold it within about 30 days and I'll never do it again.

I can't see where it has any side effects or could cause any functional problems. It just wasn't my thing. If it 'trips your trigger', I'd go for it.

As Banker said - it absolutely ruins the beautiful lines of the 1911.

I guess it's like trying to take out the flairs on an old Corvette Stingray. Just wouldn't be the same anymore. It's a nice attempt to modernize an oldie, but just doesn't retain it's good looks afterwards.

I had it done on my Kimber compact & I regret it. It ruins the classic lines
(which Kimber already does with their butt ugly cocking serrations) of a good 1911.

Well, one thing in its favor. It would be so butt ugly, no one would want to steal it for fear of being seen with such a beast! LOL!

I even remember James Clark Senior stating that the meltdown was akin to ruining a perfectly good 1911. I am all for taking off the sharp edges, but the meltdown is just too much for me. It's your gun though and if that is your preference, then I would send it to Clark and have then take the belt sander to it. That's the beauty of a custom pistol, you can have it your way!

I agree it ruins the lines of a 1911. Kimber has (or had) a "melted" gun and it looks (looked) like crap. Combined with their rock tumbled stainless finish it looks really horrid.

I melted a barrel once- but that was an M60. I don't like the way the Clarks look.

I gotta help c.rod out here even if it means putting myself in the pan. Go to the custom firearms gallery on the site on the forum and look @ the photos of Stan Chen's Officer. To me that is cool 8) , but is that a melt or just a heavy dehorn :?: Does anyone else like this much melt? Also, round that mainspring housing and highgrip. I'm thinking its the way to go
