When I started sweeping the floors at the Yost-Bonitz Custom Gun and Exotic Humor Emporium, it was clear to me that Ted had developed a recipe that was time tested through hundreds of trial and error situations. The current crew is fortunate to learn from years of what Ted developed. In short, he doesn't allow us enough rope to hang ourselves.........most of the time. We still make mistakes but the idea is not to make them so bad you can't recover. Usually about the time you are going to do something really fowl, Ted subtlley walks by and says "you sure you want to do that?" And I usually reply "maybe?" So goes the lesson.

Weekends are a good time to pick Yoda's brain. A stupid question here and there, along with keeping your mouth shut can create a good situation. I often spend time on the phone with the other LTW smiths and feel fortunate to pick their melons on how they do things in their shops. When building 1911's, HP's, or any other gun you can't help to develop your own style. On that same idea, your style has alot to do with who teaches you. I have worked for Ted and Lew for two years now and if someone even mentions that my guns look like one of Theo's it is enough for me.

The collection of smiths here represents a culmination of what others before us have done at a very high level. Tim Brian, Chuck Rogers, and Ned Christiansen have provided us a look at what is possible. Stan Chen and his eye for detail has blown up "holy sh*t" category. John Harrison is as right as the mail so to speak. Detailed, wonderfully executed, and a build that runs like hell won't have it. I look at Don's work the same way. Consistent, perfectly done, and innovative. I say these things because we all pretend to like each other. :P

I write these ideas because hopefully the next Yost, Brian, Christiansen, Rogers, Harrison, Williams, Chen or god forbid Bailey, Bagnoli, or Harms understands what goes into not how to do this a few times but how to do a good gun everytime. "The machining makes it easier, you earn your money with your hands" The gun I recently finished represents everything I know how to do at this point. The thing I love about building 1911's is I get the chance everytime I start a new one to learn how to do it better. Everyone is critical of their work. That is what keeps us neurotic, pissed off, and challenged. Here is the latest. Thanks to Ted and Lew and the constant opportunities provided. Two years ago, I had to make sure when Ted said "trigger job" he wasn't referring to a murder or a suspect. This is "my" idea of what some of them should look like.

Nice touch on a fine Ponygun that deserves to carry its makers mark. much better than punch stamped hidden away in the gun somewhere etc...

Steve,

That, my man, is a veeeery nice blaster! It could sit in my holster any day! That's a really nice idea for a multi-'smith shop, putting the builders name on the gun in a discreet place.

You are doing some really nice work that I think represents and upholds the Yost-Bonitz shop's reputation for fine craftsmanship and designs with eye appeal. I'd bet Theo's actually pretty proud of what he sees.

All I can think is that pretty soon Yo-Bo is going to sound more like a law firm, you know, "Yost, Bonitz, Bailey, Bagnoli & Harms" :D

Steve, I will trade you the first gun you ever built for this current one. That way you can see how far you've come!! Actually, that first gun was perfect....I don't see how you could improve, unless you are able to do things more efficiently. It would be kinda of fun to let you critique that first gun and compare to your current builds. I stlll shoot and enjoy that first Steve Bailey Build.

No reason to hide your name behind the slide stop, Steve.

Not with the work you're doing.

Nice job, buddy.

I'm lucky.

I've got a pretty good crew, and I'm proud of them. Even the guy that plays with rattlesnakes is kinda sharp (sometimes)

It's true - once you get old and feeble, you start to live vicariously through your apparent successors. No doubt, Steve and the boys are headed for the pistolsmith hall of fame

It's housed in a 1964 Airstream trailer parked illegally under a highway bridge next to the landfill in Agua Prieta.

Nice work, Steve. I actually like the idea of the builder's name behind the slide stop. Kinda in the Cracker-Jack secret suprise vein.

Steve,

Super work from a Super guy. The whole gang at Ted's & Lou's are great.

Then you add the LTW gang and what can you say. I wish all of you could step back as a layman and be able to admire and be amazed of what is being done here.

Well I will be your little know nothing pistol admirer and tell you that it is as good as it gets.

( At least until the next batch show up.)

Gary

Steve,

That is a damn fine pistol, and your work, along with your photography, is all top-notch. I asked a few weeks ago to get on the list at Yo-Bo. Put me under your name.

Good lookin’ blaster... I especially like the bevel on the grip safety.

I can attest to Steve’s prowess when it comes to these guns... my pair from him have thus far been very, very fine guns. I’ll do my best to wear them out for the next couple of years... then back to the shop for a re-blue... then a couple of more years wearing ‘em out... you get the picture.

Btw, I like the maker’s mark underneath the slide stop... discreet and classy. :)

And really cool, too. Excellent pistol Steve. You deserve all of the accolades. Photos are magnificent as well. Can you come out to my really, really small PD and give photography lessons. I'll buy lunch. :D

Geez, a guy that can take great pictures and build a great gun. Seems some people only get that half right.

Ted,

Thanks for telling people where I live.

Steve,

Just going along with what Witherspoon said... I'd love some photography lesson AND a good custom gun show & tell. You can come to Va and stay with me at my college apartment. There's a really nice public 125yd shooting range about ten minutes from me, and we can all play beer pong at night. Waddayasay? This may sound crazy, but other than at the SHOT show, would anyone else be interested in having a LTW "meeting/shootaround" sometime soon (after I get a real job and have a better income)?

Again, Steve, great looking pistol. You guys at Yo-Bo must have fun picking Yoda's brain. As I have learned in my teaching experience, it takes a humble student and a good teacher to make for successful learning. Kudos to you all.

Wow, Sean Smith is back! I know you can tell us but you have to kill us? :P

Anyway, thanks for the words. It really is just now that I am picking Theo's brain for some of the finer detailed stuff. Sort of like "I get it" but only kinda.

This gun has the aesthetic modifications I really like. Lacking checkering. It is hard to checker them all. The total serration guns look classic and funtional to me. The functional stuff well:
Kart barrel
YoBo action components set at exactly 4lbs.
YoBo trigger
YoBo plunger tube
Kings bushing with a close to flush cut on the barrel
High cut on the fronstrap
Heinie sights with a tritium front
Beavertail and a beveled mag well

Simple, clean and funtional. I am going to change a couple of small things before it is totally done. Not much just details.

Ted has some stuff going now that is off the hook. Can anyone say 10mm Operator? rail gun, Barsto, checkered, the whole nut Ohhhhhh Daddy.

Hope everyone is well.
Steve

You are the MAN!! Not only are you a gentleman but a fine craftsman. It is a honor to own a gun built by you and I am jealous of the lucky person that gets this one. One of the things I love about this site is that many of the smiths know what you really need to get "the job done" when it comes to a sidearm and I know with 100% confidence that I can count on my Yo Bo guns when I really need to.

Stay Safe

Engraved Fullhouse Commercials???? You're trying to get me to sell my CA house, move to AZ, and take the equity and squander it on Yost Customs aren't you?? I would too, if not for my wife.
