I have been offered a MkIII Hi-Power that needs a little TLC. Someone did a hack job on the hammer which is easily correctable, but it also appears they attempted to peen the hammer pin to keep it from walking and buggered up the frame in the process.

Sorry for the poor photos, but I wanted to get thoughts on whether or not these could be blasted away or somehow cleaned up with out a lot of $.

I have not bought the pistol. I wanted some thoughts first.

Thanks.

Anything is possible given enough time, money and skill.

A fair amount of all three will be required to fix those dings. I would pass, there are plenty of Hi Powers available in great condition at reasonable cost.

Kinda what I thought. At first I was thinking they could be bead blasted away, but they look too deep.

Got a good line on a NIB FN.

Thanks.

Just sent Gary at R&G a money order on a FN HP. I saw his as on one of the on line sale sights and we played email tag for almost two weeks before I realised he's the same GaryR&G who posts here.

Don't need to worry about dinged frames and silly owner modifcations on this one. :D

My guess is you are better off buying a used frame that is in good shape. Years ago I bought a FM High-Power and I put about 5,000 rounds through it. The only thing I had done was a trigger job and a set of plain Novak sights. I loved that pistol and I decided I wanted it gussied up.

FMs do not have beautifully finished frames, the imperfections are hidden under the layer of enamel like paint. The worst area on my FM was where the magazine release is inserted. I had the gunsmith polish that area before it was reblued. I got my baby back and it was pretty. I took it to the range and the frame let go in the area of where the magazine release is inserted.

I had, because of my stupidity, scrap. Thank God for Alex Hamilton who put Humpty Dumpty back together using a pre-owned frame.

Regards,

Richard:D

Richard I think you miss read the post. I sold Jeff an FN not an FM. One letter off but very different quality wise.

Jeff, your FN looks good!!. I have your buddies boxed and waiting for him to say ship it. Something about your states laws on how many you can buy in 30 days. Makes me appreciate Oklahoma. Until tornado season that is!!

Gary, my guess is I read too fast and I missed the fact that another pistol was sold to the poster. My advice is valid if someone already has a HP in similar condition. I was very pleased by the service I received on mine from Ten-Ring Precision and I highly recommend them. Remember, I had junk parts, for all practical purposes, prior to sending it to Alex. Regards, Richard :D

I have that same disease. Incureable and highly contagious. Just spend an hour on LTW and your infected.
