Does a ball cut on a 1911 slide affect weight and therefore more felt recoil?

Great question!!!!
In my limited experience, less slide weight equals less perceived recoil.
Of course, things like slide travel and spring weights come into play. :D

Yeah, I was wondering if you need a different spring weight for this slide. I was thinking about doing this on a 10mm DE and also a Wilson CQB Compact, but the recoil thought prompted me to ask the question.

A local IPSC shooter brought me a 5" .40 S&W slide and asked me to lighten it for him. I machined three slots in the slide with a 1/2" end mill. They ran from just forward of the locking grooves to just short of the front sight. The results were surprising in that the weight didn't go down as much as I expected (about an ounce, but I've got to consult my notes to be sure) and the shooter didn't see a tremendous difference in the way the gun shot. He told me that the only thing that he could tell for sure was that his splits were just a touch quicker and that the muzzle flip was just a tiny bit less. What I did learn is that the best way to take weight off a slide is to shorten it, anything else makes you do a lot of work for a small gain.
