Since there seems to be a resurgence in "retro" styled guns, I was wondering what the best quality spur hammer for a custom gun is. I assume that alot of people just used Colt hammers, but I do know that Rock River Arms and STI sell aftermarket spur hammers as well. I'm curious if anybody has tried a few of these and come up with any conclusions about which ones are better. Thanks. :D

Sean, I've used the STI hammers, and they're good. I haven't used the Rock River hammers, but their quality seems to be good overall, and I'd give one a try. The STI hammers also have the extra bonus of being able to work with a beavertail.

I've used a couple of the C&S "M Corp" hammers which were very nice. However, I don't see them in Brownell's anymore but they may still be available direct.

If you like a wide-spur early-style hammer, Brownell's is offering a new one from EMC. It seems like a very high quality part. I currently have one on a retro NRM Colt that is with Ted, and I will be installing one in my engraved Remington-Rand in the near future. The R-R currently has an M-Corps hammer. The M-Corps is a great piece of work, but the top of the hammer is a little funky....

From the looks of it, you'd have to trim quite a bit off of the hammer for that to work.

I am having a retro built at Yost/Bonitz. It is a SA and I think Ted said they use a Colt grip safety and Colt spur hammer........

The EMC hammer has the same spur length and profile as an original 1911 hammer. With a short 1911 grip safety, it WILL bite you. With a slightly longer 1911A1 grip safety, it will bite SOME people. You would have to hack it WAY back to make it work with any type of beavertail.

I have a nice semi-circle scar from the EMC hammer on the web of my hand before I trimmed it back and reshaped my grip safety. I imagine it would be well hacked up to fit a beavertail

Nice quality hammer though, isn't it?

So far so good. I haven't heard much from others who are much more in the know then I about it. I am using it with an EGW sear and I've had good results.

I guess time will tell.

EMC has also released a retro checked slide stop.

I saw that the other day. Of course that was a week after I ordered a similar slide stop from EGW. Good to know there are more choices. It bugs me to have a mix of serrations and checkering on gun. One or the other is fine...just not both at t he same time!
