thank you
Tim

They add length to the but of the weapon and may make it more difficult to conceal. A standard beveled mag well works fine for me.

I don't carry Govt. size 1911s, and all my carry guns have either Officer's or Bobtailed Commander frames. Having said that, all my carry guns with Officer's frames have magwells on them. The reason for it has more to do with the fact that it makes just the perfect size grip for my somewhat large hands – a "bare" Officer's frame is just a little too short for me. The intended purpose of a magwell (quicker reloads) is just a plus. Also, I really like the look of magwells on 1911s (and I’m in minority here; most people here don't like them at all), and I have them on all my 1911s – they just "complete" the look to me. My favorite magwells are Wilson Combat Speed Chute, or S&A regular (not slim line model) magwell with John Harrison's bevel treatment (# 707) on it. Below is a picture of my favorite carry gun that John has worked over, including his beveled S&A magwell.

You could always use one of the Heinie style or custom magwells where the frame is cut down and the magwell is welded on thus you get the larger opening with no increase in length.
The best of both worlds.

On my Kimber Compact I've not found the lack of an extended magwell a problem. Mine was properly beveled! My thinking, at least for me is cure to a problem that does not exist and makes a large gun even harder to conceal.

Here's an old SA Custom Shop gun that was built with a welded-on Brown Mag Funnel. 1/4" of the frame is cut off prior to welding on the magwell so the overall length of the grip frame remains the same as stock.

This has seen *a few* mag changes since it was built in 1988.

Here's a weld-on magwell by SDM Fabricating, installed by Mark Hartshorne of Pinnacle High Performance:

I have scallops on my Kimber Compact. I believe this is the first time I've seen it done on the slide. Nice touch!

I personally don’t like the add-a magwells but I do like the cut-n-paste magwells. They work great for carry but are usually an expensive option.

This link shows one type of cut-n-paste magwells

Here is our weld on well, it is 60 degree and not the 45 degree
angle around the opening. Also it is 5/16 tall and not the typicall 1/4".

That sure is a purtty one!

That's also about the best looking roll-mark I've ever seen on an ORM. Did you do something special to clean it up, or where the planets just in alignment the day that slide was marked at Colt?

The work that you guys have shared is simply stellar!

Alex K. - what kind of front and rear sight is that? I've been looking for someone to do an optic front and adjustable rear.

Thanks,
Mitch

Mitch,
The rear sight is Bo-Mar, and the front is slightly modified EGW fiber optic sight - it comes "closed" on muzzle end, so I drilled it through to make fiber rod installation easier. I also have a Brazos lighting rod front sight on my CDP gun and it works great, too. Hope it helps.
- Alex.
