Not sure how to start this question. I've got the option to start a custom build on either a steel Commander or stainless steel Govt model. I shot them both yesterday. When both shot with Winchester white box 230 fmj, to me the Govt feels like a push vs a quick, brisant, jab with the Cmdr. The muzzle "flip" with the Govt seems to roll over higher and slower than the Cmdr which is quick and shorter. I know for a fact the Cmdr has a 20-lb recoil spring in it. Not sure of the Govt, which seems less than 20-lbs.

What's your shooting impression with both? :?:

I have and shoot both. Personally I perfer the Govt model. I shoot better with it. This may be because I have been shooting longer with it than a Comander gun. The recoil on a commander gun to me is a bit snappier, but that is just me.

Alan, Your observations of the Gov't vs. Commander are pretty accurate. While I've had no problem shooting the shorter guns, they do feel different. Removing slide mass via shortening the slide means that a given load has less weight to move, and this can only be partially compensated for by using a heavier recoil spring. Additionally, the heavier spring will mean that the lighter slide will move forward into battery more quickly, adding to the "snappy" feel as it locks up. Also, the shorter the slide, the less sight radius you have, and this can affect some shooters, especially those of us whose eyes aren't what they were. Best,
