I' going to have a custom Sig P229 refinished. My Preference is black for this gun (has some polished stainless steel parts to break up the black) My question is which of the new teflon finishes are recomended? Black T, Duracoat, etc.

Well, I'm somewhat biased to this effect, but you might check out Cobracoat from Tripp Research,

heres the website:

http://www.trippresearch.com

just give Virgil a call and he should be able to answer any questions you might have.

i personally believe black t is the BEST black finish on the market.

last i checked it was $160 there and back to get a sig 220 done.

call him up and talk to him. he will tell you about his process and everything else. been doing it for a long time and has a ton of military contracts i guess.

if i was getting hard chrome i would probably get tripps..

I have a custom Novak P220 that was hard anodized first and then sent to Walter Birdsong,
The finish is pretty durable, and does make the gun slick and pretty-but it doesn't look as
pretty as it wears. I will say that it does look at least as good as the original SIG finish as it
wears, and does protect a whole lot better. I do not like the shiny gun look, but if I were to
do it again, it would be a matte hardchrome. JMHO, of course.

m.hall. you had your gun re anodized??

birdsong, does not ever strip off the hard anodizing on any alum. frames .

example. if you have a sig. he goes over the oem finish on the frame. (hard anodizing) because it is part of the integrity of the alum....

I too am curious about this. Originaly I checked with Novak and they quoted me a price that was more than double the price quoted today by Mr. Birdsong and Novak was going to send it out to Mr. Birdsong. All of which left me puzzled as to the extreme mark up. This reanodizing may be the reason for the added expense.

All of which poses another question for the experts here...
If the anodizing on the frame is in good shape, would reanodizing be required? Posibly for adherance issues with the black T???

I too have looked at mat hard chrome. Guess that option is still on the table if it is that much superior in the wear department. Just assumed the newer generation of finishes wear good. That being based on how the finish on my Glock has performed.

M. Hall, are you saying that Black T wears as quickly as the original Sig finish?

BTW thanks all for the input so far, it really helps me sort thru the available options

Hello c.rod and gunslinger! My gun was indeed built by Novak's. Since I had them remove the
trigger guard hook, and hand-matte all the way from the mag well up the trigger gaurd to the
dust tube, as well as bevelling the mag well and de-horning the gun, I had to have it re-anodized
(which Novak's includes in the Black T price). The Black T holds up slightly better, but very
different than the SIG finish. I don't really know how I'd describe it...but here goes. The SIG
finish goes straight to a base-metal shiny silver wear points, whereas the Black T gets real
glossy before going to the base metal. Walter has offered, very generously, to refinish it
until I'm happy, but since I only carry this one in my fanny pack while jogging, it is no longer an
issue. One word of advice: Don't use kydex with Black T. (which shouldn't be an issue, since
real guns belong in real leather  ).

While I don't -- yet -- have personal experience when I was researching finishes I found numerous good reviews for Arizona Response System's Metalcote. My P229 is there right now for a refinish since it was my second ever handgun and needed some serious love.

It should be back relatively soon, though they're slammed with FAL work after the Assault Weapon's ban sunsetted...

Have you checked out CCR Refinishing? On Sigforum.com there are a lot of happy customers. I had him do a satin black (I think they call it HK Black) on my slide, and the quality is really good. I can't comment about wear, since I have not carried it much since I got it back, but I am sure that I read some posts there talking about it's durability.

im assuming that if your sig/aluminum frame was worked on. i would almost bet that they didnt strip off whatever was left on the frame. he told me its the worst thing to do. which makes complete sense. but anyway. i have heard/seen how the black t wears off. it looks kinda cool in my book, but it will wear. and mostly like a lot of other holster guns. corners ect.

im pretty sure for the utmost abrasion resistance, that hard chrome is the best. but anything in black youre pretty much screwed in the long run.

Of all the black finishes available today, I would go with the Black T, but as stated-it won't last
forever under hard use. Mine still looks fairly good after 2 trips to Gunsite, and daily carry for
2 years, but I'd do hard-chrome if I were to do it again.....

I would go with Robar
NP3 frame and Roguard on the slide
nice classic two tone look

I have seen a couple with this and it is first rate

Same set up with Leatham Signature Series SA's
