Just thought I'd share some preliminary pics of this Colt. I just got it back from Ned yesterday - it was an old roll mark 1991A1 matte blue Commander. The gun was pretty much brand-new-in-the-box (even though an ORM) when I sent it to Ned a couple of months ago. And bone stock from the factory it was a great gun, nicely fitted and stone reliable. I wasn't all that keen on the look of the ORM, though, so I thought it was the perfect candidate as a canvas for Ned's custom artistry.

Ned worked all over the gun from top to bottom... slide top serrated with a cross "X" motif which is repeated on the front strap and the bobtail MSH... the serrations extend up onto the grip safety pad too, which is a very cool detail. The carry bevel work is exquisite as well. There really are a lot of great little touches all over the gun inside and out. Too much to elaborate on here. The gun is still stone reliable, but a bit more accurate now, and really feels superb in the hand. This gun is among the three or four nicest 1911's I have, including my John Harrison Colt 1991 Custom Government and a Colt Series 70 Government that Virgil Tripp recently customized for me.

These pics are just quick shots so I could show the gun, but I plan to do a much better, more detailed photo session later. Here she is.

BTW...I decided that for a blued Commander I really wanted a new rollmark model rather than the ORM that I had. So that made it much easier to send off the ORM to become a custom. I really like the "no rollmark" look (like Ed Brown's guns have on the slide's left side) so I asked Ned to grind off the "ORM". It would have been much more difficult to ask Ned to grind off one of Colt's "NEW" roll marks which are so beautiful, so the ORM model was a perfect candidate for a 1911 with no rollmark at all on the left side. (Yes, I'm a little picky about the look of rollmarks... One of my many foibles, for sure! )

On the right side of the slide it still says "Commander Model"... I wanted to leave that rollmark because it looks very clean and tasteful and identifies the slide as the original Colt Commander slide.

As for parts, I prefer and wanted to stay with all original Colt parts except the sights, grip safety, sear, disconnector, barrel bushing, MSH, and grips.

Thanks, Ned, for creating a work of art with my Commander! That's two custom Commanders you've done for me... so now I've got to decide what the next project will be...

That's a classy looking gun. Man, what a huge difference. I love that serration pattern. Ned even makes simple look far out.

Great pics, you make it look better than real life! For example, you can barely see that big patch of Bondo on the side of the slide :D

That's only my second Bobtail (and each time I made a special fixture, having forgotten I made one the first time  ). This is one of the most under-appreciated mods, I think. Guess a lot of people haven't felt one and maybe are reluctant to make such a radical change-- but I'd say it's a concealment advantage and no downside in handling, probably an advantage to some hands.

Beautiful work Ned, very clean. You showed some restraint with the milling machine. :P Nice photographs as well.

That's a beautifully done Commander! I may have to take the 'bobtail plunge' one of these times.

I'm curious Ned... This one looks like you built it right here on earth. Dosen't the mothership frown on that kind of thing?

That is a slick gun. It reminds me of one of those street rods with the emblems, door handles, etc removed and everything smoothed up.

Thanks John... between the SS 1991A1 Government you did for me and this Commander from Ned, I'm elated... they're my two most prized 1911's.

Here's one more pic... more to come later.

Congrats to DHart and Ned.

That looks very nice, although I'm with Steve on not being sure how the master of machining Ned did not send the mill into overdrive. :D

DHart - Glad to see you also like 1911s, besides your S&Ws. Nice pictures as always.

Best,

Ray

Steve & Ray.... Ned was very eager to do some cool new things on this gun, which I'm sure would have been really awesome! I did want a touch of Ned's creativity (which I got with the "X" motif serrations), but I'm one to lean a little more on the convervative (less is more) side myself, so... I had to send a team of the Budweiser Clydesdale horses to Michigan to hold him back from doing more! ;-)~

What the mother ship don't know won't hurt her

DHart, those Clydesdales are welcome here any time. Bet they were happy with the lighter load on the return trip <burp>.

I was wondering (or as they say around here- "wunnerin") if we could have a shot that shows the "X" serrations in full view?

That's the most understated piece I've ever seen come out of His Nedliness's shop. Yet it still 'flows'. Very nicely done!

That is really a beautiful piece of work!
I am quite jealous, I have been trying to get down to Ned's for the past couple months to drop him off a Colt I want some work done to but between work and family members in and out of the hospital it just has not been able to happen yet....

Enjoy and I hope to join Team Ned soon ; )
