A few months ago Theo was featured in one of the industry periodicals. The article was about what guns the smiths carried. Ted's was a LW Commander. Ted has often mentioned that he has built many a LW's for guys working undercover, celebrities, and the secret ninja types that work in other continents other than North America. It seems alot of guys in the know will pick this sort of set up if concealment and carry can last days, not hours.

The lines of this gun were a little rough when it hit Ted's bench. Amazing what some emery paper and a few files....and a milling machine can do to give an old classic a beautiful face lift. The stocks were made out of a piece of Cocobolo Ted and I picked out at a local exotic wood store. One look and Ted and I thought they would turn out wonderfully. These are the nicest stocks I have seen on a 1911. Sealed, oiled, and perfectly executed on the gun.

At times I run out of props, ideas, etc...when taking photos. When I get a gun like this you get a little juiced up and sometimes they turn out. Enjoy.

This is the type of gun Ted would build for himself. In fact it may have started that way. I would imagine this will be on the blocks before too long. Like Ted says "they are all for sale, that is why we build 'em" 8)

Yummy
I'm a huge fan of that rounded MSH.

Steve, will you post the price here?

Ted - All I can say is keep 'em coming, man. If I can find a decent LW around I think I'll snatch it up and send it your way. I have my degree and a job now, still no wife, and no kids (that I know of), so money for guns might be a little easier to come by.

Steve - Your photography kicks arse. Good stuff, man.

...about how gorgeous this Commander is. So much so, in fact, that I bought her from Ted, and picked her up today from my transfer gun shop.

She's everything you can see above, plus a nicely trimmed ambidextrous safety that Ted fitted for me as a left-hander for whom this item is not an option. He thinned and radiused the left side lever so that it doesn't dent the base of my left index finger knuckle the way other ambi safeties do.

The cocobolo grips look even richer in person than they do in the lovely photos above. And the front sight blade has the vertical 24k gold inlay, which works well for those of us of advancing years and declining eyesight.

But for a pistol that is running over with delightful features, the one thing that makes the biggest single impression for me is the radiused mainspring housing, with grips slightly rounded to fit perfectly. This gentle smoothing of a component that we're all used to having hard lines (well, maybe except for the Ed Brown Kobra crew) is something that looks wonderful, and feels even better in the hand.

The total package is one rare heirloom pistol that I'm proud to own and carry in the future after testing with my carry ammo (for the purist collectors among you, I'm sorry that she won't be a safe queen, but guns are tools, even exceptional ones). Don't worry, I won't carry her all the time, but I certainly will for a good while.

I'll post a few more pics when I have a new digital camera (long story, but short lesson - don't buy Kodak digital, I've had two fail at once-in-a-lifetime events).

Thanks again, Ted - she's in good, appreciative hands.

Buck
