hey guys, lately ive been in a 9mm mood. i was curious if any of the smiths have done one of these yet?

dont get me wrong. i love the .45. but hate the rapid fire recoil in small guns. i think it would be great to get a sidewinder in 9mm or something like it....

thanks.

I'm not aware of any base guns offered in 9mm that would be suitable for building a SideWinder.

It may not end up as a Sidewinder, but what about a Springfield Armory Champion in 9mm as a base gun?

Looking at the SA website, I don't see the Champion available in 9mm.

A normally knowledgable fellow at one of my local gunshops told me they were available a couple months ago. Perhaps they're not listed in the catalog (a special run) or he was wrong. Can you imagine a gunshop giving out incorrect information :o ???

I have a Springfield Ultra Compact in 9mm. It has a 3.5" barrel instead of a 3". Would that work?

I was thinking of having it re-chambered in 9x23? :?

I guess my first concern would be whether a stiff enough recoil spring would fit and allow full cyclic action. Other than that, I don't see why it couldn't be rechambered.

I'm personally not a big fan of the 'sub calibers'. I know, I know, the ballistics charts show this and that, but while a 9mm/9x23 'may' expand, a 45 will damn sure never shrink.

ISMI makes a neat guide rod and special square wire spring that is alleged to last 50,000 rds in an OM
I haven't tried one yet

A Commander in 9x23 uses an 18lb-19# recoil spring, so an OM woould need 20-22lbs probably. A full strength hammer spring, and good mags (Metalform makes OM .38 super mags with the round follower) would also be essential. I would also consider using a flat bottom firing pin stop.

Sounds fun!

A 9x23, 125gr Silvertip@1400 fps out of an OM would be pretty slick.

yeah, i used to think like that too. until i got pretty heavy into shooting. idpa, ect. besides being cheaper, without constant 1,000rd. per week shooting, i cannot keep my rapid fire groups even close to the same size as with my 9mm. im talking about a govt model too!. i generally dont get to hyped into the 9mm vs. .45 debate.. BUT with todays hollow point designs ect. such as the federal hst, winchester ranger ect. i dont feel "undergunned" with my puny glock 19 (16rounds comfortably)9mm.

but the ONLY gun i will even consider a .45 in anymore is some sort of a 1911 design. i have had nothing but bad luck with double stack .45's and honestly will never buy one again!

anyway, CTBRIAN, im "pre placing" my order for a sidewindered version of the springfield defender in .45gap.. :)
