 Has this been investigated by anyone who could actually build one?

Gus, Unless a factory wants to take this on, I doubt you'll see most 'smiths try it. It's harder than it sounds. Along with the mag modifications needed, you'll have to have a bigger bushing on the muzzle end of the slide to accomodate the larger O.D. barrel (assuming there's enough room inside the slide for the barrel to start with). Also, a larger breech face for the bigger rim, and a few other things that will crop up, it would be quite a project. Add in the rumors that keep cropping up about FN and Browning dropping the HP design altogether, and it doesn't look good unless another Mfr. wants to give it a try. Best,

Definitely a "if cost was no object" proposition.

Will the GAP survive?

The biggest stumbling block I found was in the magazine. The taper is too narrow, and a .45 GAP won't rise high enough without metal bending and re-shaping. The rest are just details (albeit some of them big details) but without magazines there isn't any point in trying it. I can promise a cover photo of the gun for the 'smith who succeeds.

That looks like a dangling carrot
