I have a commander size light weight S&W. It's seems to be an excellant gun and very reliable but I want to personalize it. One thing I know I want is a Ed Brown type Bob Tail. The frame will need to be refinished afterward but what are my opinions on finish.
Also I want to take the large bill board off the left side of the slide so I'm thinking high polish blue on the flats.
Anyone have any pictures of a similar project or ideas.

A bobtailed scandium frame is something I would like to see and hear the details of how it was done.

Keep us posted.

Should be like doing an aluminum one. Yes?

You got me.

I'm not familiar with the properties of scandium in the slightest. I know full power 44 mag loads in my 329 will tend to make my wrist sore and my 325 can be a tad hard to hold onto with wood grips.

I'm not sure how brittle scandium is, but it could very well be possible to machine without being overly complicated.

Marc Morganti of Gemini Custom has done bobtails on the Scandium frames. His work has been excellent, and prices and turn around are very good.

My understanding is that the scandium is just a small fraction of the aluminum alloy. For most purposes it should be the same as a regular aluminum frame.

I wonder what kind of cost this job should come to?

It's not as problem to do. I just did one for a fellow in the N.W. area, and it re-anodized just as would aluminum.

Don, what did you charge and would you do mine if I shipped you the frame?

Wow, thanks for posting your thread Marsh. Because the Smith 1911s are pretty much the only viable option in MA (), I'm planning on buying a S&W Scandium Commander for concealed carry.

I also want to have it bobtailed, amongst a bunch of other things.

Thanks,
Paul

Nice gun Marsh. I've got a PC1911 that I'd like to have some work done on in the future. I'm just not sure of where to send it to. Decisions, decisions...
