I took a pistol class this weekend and shot about 800 rounds. A few times I had a slightly suboptimal grip and the checkering really raped my hands.

What options do I have for toning the checkering down a bit? Just have someone knock the points down?

Just shoot more often your hands will calous and you won't feel the checkering . It sounds as if the checkering did what it was supposed to do.

I'd love to shoot every day. But I can't. I have a 3 month old and a very understanding wife, but one weekend every month or so is about all I can do.

I must be a wimp. I had a Sprinfield TRP that Ted worked on the checkering. It is without doubt my favorite pistol.

Most people who own custom pistols with checkering don't shoot them enough to get bitten. Picking up a pistol and place it in the hand and shoot i.e. at the local indoor range isn't like snatching it out of the holster in a two-three days/week long class. That hand/fingers slamming against the front strap 100 times plus a day put a lot of wear and tear on your hand.

Smooth: What do you recommend? I thought about finding some canvas duck tape (or gaffers tape) and putting that on the front strap.

That seems easier than taping up my hands on Day 2

I must be a mutant freak because all of my 1911's are checkered and I shoot the living daylights out of them and the checkering has never bothered me. Last year I sent 25,000+ down range and tried to do 100 draws a night 3 or 4 times a week and it doesn't faze me in the least.

The funny thing is that I don't work with my hands and don't consider my hands to be particularly rough.

Dryfire.

If you can't get to the range, strap on your holster and make sure your blaster is unloaded, and draw at home. Will tough up your hands nicely and you won't be bothered by checkering anymore.

You can tape the checkering at the range. Use hockey tape it still provides purchase (more then duct tape) but is much smoother then the checkering. Plus it comes in lots of colors.

I shoot a lot, and the only times I have ever had my hands get little chewed up is at a firearms class that you have a lot of drawing and shooting. I don't have checkering on my front strap but I do have grip tape, it's always new tape at the start of the class. I don't get raw from the tape, but things like the safety, or the sharp corners on the bottom of the mainspring housing. I notice where the offending part is on my gun and it gets addressed with a small file and wet/dry paper when I get home.

My guns don't look pretty because of this, but they fit me like a glove.

Jon

PS. javentre, Drew finally shot the P220ST that you sold him. Shoots great he really likes it. I shot a qualifier with it, and maxed it. I guess I liked it too!

That is exactly what I was doing. Draw - > Double Tap -> Reholster. I probably averaged 3 shots per draw all weekend.

Glad that 220 is working out.

I got baby's hands. :P

Looks like taping up the front strap is the way to go.

30 LPI should not be abusive. I have it on EAGLE II and it passed muster out a Gunsite. Colonel Bob Young said it was the best pistol he ever held. They do not like agressive checkering out there.

I prefer to train like I'll fight (hopefully never have to).

The feel is just too different.

Not to mention a pistol class in the summer ... with gloves really doesn't sound fun.

Good point javentre. The only time I shot more than a few hundred rounds from a 1911 at once and didn't bleed was at a class where I wore gloves. It was snowing though....
