I like them, Chuck! :D 8)

Now, can I get you to ship that CCO on over for a, shall we say, "extended" test period?

I still have 10 years or so till "over fifty", but I find that simply widened rear notch is very helpful. This one, though, is much more than just a widened rear notch. Outstanding.

Chuck,

For us who are fans of the Heinie Straight 8 concept and over 50, could you put a tritium vial under the "U"? Or even modify a Heinie rear to work with the XS front? Or crazier yet, one of those TruGlo fronts with a Staight 8 rear?

Steve Ford,
Any of the smiths here can custom build you any sights you can envision.
Tritium can be added in dot or bar form. Green or yellow, with or without white outlines.
It may not happen tomorrow, but it can be done.
The YoBo Pro sights are the most versatile for many custom applications.
:D

That is the most practical application of the Ashley/OS sight I have ever seen. Terrific.

That is EXACTLY what I want on my BHP.
I am closer to 70 than 50(OK. I am 70) and even with the new bi-lateral lens implants and great vision, I am sure that these sights will give me the CQB pick up I want.
Truth be told I would rather the set be for 15 rather than ten yards.
Thank you for posting these photos. I will be saving them in my "gots ta have" file.

I have to agree with Chuck Rogers.

I just got two of my Les Baers back from YoBo with the new Professional Grade sights on them. Between the vivid white outline around the tritium vials (I went with the standard 3 green dot setup) and the wider notch of the rear sight, even my tired eyes now have a decent chance.

I looked briefly at the new Novak wide notch rear sight, too, but I much prefer the profile on the YoBo sights, which allows easy hooking on the belt, holster or heel for one-handed manipulation of the slide. PS, they look great, too! :D

Highly recommended - contact Jason Burton, and he'll square you away. I'll be sending him my SRP for the same sights shortly - they're that much better, at least for what I need and want in a set of sights.

Chip,

I said nothing. I held my tongue ole buddy!

Although, these are the perfect sights for Capt. Tighe. He'd be able to see the gun with them! :)

Chuck,

Those sights look pretty good to me. I've never been much for big sights since I don't yet need them, but I may someday and it's good to know what's available. If you put a fat gold bead on the front, Chip would take a few sets for his future guns. Put them on a shiny .38 Super with some pimp grips and he'd sell a testicle for it. You guys are terriblke for picking on an old Marine. I'd stay far away. I hear he qualified expert with his musket.

Great sights, Chuck.

Damn it Jim, I haven't laughed so hard since the time you paid that pretty escort service girl to pretend she was your girfriend the night we all had dinner at the River City Diner!

If you are in a hurry, Novak sells sights that are very similar to the rear sights posted. Although I did not see them on his web site, just ask for the ghost sight.

That "over 50" thing is real. One of my squad homeboys at the Single Stack was shooting right-handed and left-eyed....he can't make the front sight sharp with his right anymore. And yet he can useiron sights to shoot 2" groups at 200 yards in High Power (he's a High Master), just because the front sight is further out.

Al, that's not funny. I'm still paying that "escort service girl." By the way, she saw your post and says she prefers the term "well-compensated date." Either way, I'm glad we could have some fun and laughs at Chip's expense.

Chuck, although this thread went a bit askew, I honestly do think those sights are a great idea and they look good, too.

Your right Jim, I apologize to Chuck for taking his thread of course.

I have to wonder about any sight on a "carry/combat" pistol though. At our usage distances what is useful and what is not? What are "range" sights for longer distances that will never be employed on a carry gun?

The only delineator we have for what works and what does not in the "real world" is in competition and XS or Ashley sights have never been on a gun that won anything?

At self defense distances and out to short contact distance sights are all but useless anyway.

I'm not saying they won't look larger for us "over 50" crowd, but you'd have to prove it before you just show me a bigger sight that easier to see!

Just my 2cents, if I offended I am sorry.

According to a recent and imaginary survey, gunfights among participants over fifty occur at closer range (can't run away, can't see trouble coming, saw trouble coming and forgot, the reasons are legion), so, super-precise sight pictures for long distance shots are less necessary. :D

This is really funny, Ned :D.

Considering that I'll probably be over 50 when my name comes up on your list, I'll probably ask you to remove rollmarks and get the slide engraved with something like "Shoot, trouble is here!".

I'll jump back in with a comment, even though my friends have been picking on my 50+ eyes. :D

I am still required to qualify out to 25 yds on the FBI "Q" target and I can promise you that a large bright sight makes it a lot easier for me to line up center mass from that distance.

I have been very fortunate to have a number of gentlemen, to include George Smith, John Harrison, Don Williams and Ted Yost cater to my efforts to find to find something that works for me. As I progressed through different sight arrangements my eyesight got a little worse, so what was good in 2001 was not as good in 2005. What is working best for me currently, and hopefully from now on out, is a .125" gold bead from SDM Fabricating that Dave Sams has installed on several of my pistols.

The whole point of this rambling is to thank Chuck, as well as others, for catering to the "old eye crowd". And for all of you young whippersnappers that ain't there yet, take good notes, 'cause you will be eventually.

..."XS or Ashley sights have never been on a gun that won anything? "

I thought that the Ashley sights were derived from rifles used to hunt dangerous game, and that many hunters had 'won' their lives due to their use in quick and close life threatening encounters.

[quote="Al Shear"]

..."At self defense distances and out to short contact distance sights are all but useless anyway."

Not meant in an argumentative manner, but what do you base the above statement on ? Jeff Cooper and Chuck Taylor are generally in disagreement with that statement. The NYPD, before they promoted use of sights had an absolutely horrid connect % in shoot-outs , which mostly occurred at short range.

Glad that Chuck Rogers posted about these sights, particularly for us older folks.

John

The Ashley OS sights as they some out of the wrapper have a different POI than standard notch/post sights.

What Chuck did was modify the front sights to work with a modified Novak so the sights are lined up like conventional sights--a vast improvement over the OS standard set up, IMO.

The OS big dot sights are all but impossible to use precisely at most ranges past 10-12 yards and they require a different sight picture than what most of us are used to.

Chuck's modification is brilliant and takes the best of both worlds.

At a John Farnam class 3 years ago I had the opportunity to run 10 guns of various platforms on steel targets at full speed. These were close targets and I am a pretty fair shot. The only setup that was unuseable for me was a 1911 with big-dot Ashley sights as the POI was at the center of the large front dot, not the top of the front sight like my brain is used to!

Chuck, I am sure your mod will be knocked off with frequency!

Good Day All,

Let me give some encouragement, but NOT that of the type that Napoleon used to give.(He would allegedly shoot at random several Generals upon occasion, to "encourage the others")

My encouragement is based on being over the 50 year mark.
Actually I am at the 70 years mark, and have just have celebrated the one year anniversary of progressive cataract surgery.
My very poor vision has been improved to a degree wherein it is better than the day I took my physical to enter the police department that first employed me in 1964.

Another salutary effect was the "curing" of the annoying and debilitating Glaucoma, to a point where I no longer require daily medications.
Occular pressures are below normal.(That is a good thing)

I can drive a vehicle without any license restrictions nor need to wear any corrective lenses except for reading; and that a mild "drugstore"
over the counter perscription.
Driving at night is easy and the ONLY negative is a slight sensitivity to glare.
For this I have an excuse to some wear some cool, dark Sarengettis during the day and light gradients at night.(NON-perscription).

A return to shooting has been easy with the vast improvement in vision and target aqusition is not difficult at all, although I will be having Ted give my BHP the "Old Guy Special".

I strongly suggest that if anyone feels that his vision could be improved with the aid of a decent Doc, do not hesitate to do it. It has renewed my outlook(so to speak) and I recommend it to all.

Current: right eye 20.15
left eye 20/20
And that Aint bad.

Joel Ariel
