As I understand it the arched and wedge shaped MSH are to fill the hands a little fuller at the back and thereby raise the point of aim. I have shot both, and not stictly use the flat.

An advantage, if you see it that way, top the flat NSH is variety in your choice of surface texture. You can get a smooth one and have it treated in any variety of textures. Most arched MSH's that I have seen have a simple grooved pattern. That bieng said I have both types, and prefer the flat style. My hands are on the smaller side.

I think it is personal preference. More feel than anything else. I have arched checkered (arched checkered are available from Brownells), flat checkered, flat scaled, arched serrated, bobtail smooth, and bobtail serrated on my guns. My son has one of the checkered wedge style and it is kind of growing on me. I cant tell any have an impact on accuracy. But I prefer the feeling of the flat.

Speaking of flat checkered wait til I post the pics of the CT Brian S70 Commander , built in 97-98, I picked up today. Sweeeeeet. :D
Barsto, Accu rails, frenched, checkered and an amazing trigger. More to come later!

Try both on some rented or borrowed 1911's and see which one you like better. As Gary said it's really a personal preference.

For me, the arched mainspring housing feels more natural in my presentation as it brings the pistol on target quicker due to the raised point of aim.

Chuck Taylor recommends the arched mainspring housing except for those persons with very large "meaty" hands which sort of act like an arched mainspring housing by pushing the pistol into a higher point of aim. I believe the 1911A1 switched to an arched mainspring housing based on the comments of soldiers who used the original 1911 design and believed that it pointed too low. Notwithstanding the foregoing, most top IPSC shooters appear to use the flat mainspring housing.

Let us know which one you chose and why.

I have switched out the plastic flat MSH on both a Series One Kimber and a Colt 1991 for metal arched ones thinking that they will point more "glockish" as that is the other weapons platform I shoot.
Thoughts comments etc are invited please.

The wedge is a good competition set upthough I dont recommend it for carry I like it but if you bobble your presentation you may have a tendency to no get a high grip beavertail disengaged, nothing like a 35lb trigger pull when you want a bang! Mine has a mag well and was made by Ed Brown and I think it has been discontinued. I shot IDPA and IPSC with it. It will also wear a raw spot on the bottom of your hand if you are not accustom to it, mine is also chkrd 20 lpi. I have large paws and prefer either oversized grip panels with a flat msh or standard panels with an arched msh. I shoot the same as long as one of those combinations is on the gun I am using. I have tried all kinds. Although I like the look of the flat better and having shot and held all of GARY@RNG's guns it all comes down to preference. I will not however have 20 lpi on a backstrap again as it is awful sharp during extended shooting sessions and I have dulled mine with a stone quite a bit. Hope that helps my advice is to buy all different combo's or try out guns with different one I am really starting to like flat serrated like is on the caspian 10mm posted by gary@rng.
