Can I have my hardchromed Colt refinished into a black gun? If I can which is the best black finish on the market? Not wanting a glossy gun, but a flat black similiar to Black-T, or Enviro-Tech. Thanks in advanced.

Black T over hardchrome would be good. If the finish scratched it wouldnt rust.

Would it 'stick' to hardchrome? I know on my Sig-Sauer, it 'sticks' better to the plain steel slide better than
the anodized frame.....

you would have to check with Walter Birdsong on that. I seem to recall that it was possible.

No, it would add less than $100 to the cost, depending on who is doing the hardchrome removal. I don't think Birdsong is set up to do it so you'd have to ship to someone that does, get it done and pay shipping back to you and then ship it to Walter. You'd pay more in shipping than in the removal process. I think that the last time I had a frame stripped it cost me $35 plus shipping two ways.

Why strip the hard chrome? Shouldn't it only add protection to the metal if the black coating does get scratched or something?

It would in theory but it's hard to apply any coatinss over hard chrome and get them to stick as well as they do on plain steel. It's all about surface prep. If you have a polished hard chrome, you're probably not going to get very good results out of coating it with some thermally-cured (fancy talk for "baked on") finish. If you're going to go that route, you'd really need a comparatively rough surface to hard chrome on and then put the Black-T or whatever on the resulting matte hard chrome.

a light blasting would do the trick. I believe Walter would be best to talk to. I have a bake on finish on my kimber that was hardchromed and it has lasted well. Its not teflon but I am sure it could be done. I wouldnt strip it if I didnt have to. mho, Chuck

all of this concerning a gun that is already hardchromed as I understood your earlier statement.

What I have learned is the hard chrome needs to be chemically stripped first prior to whatever black finish is to be applied. I don't want to get in a experimental mode and put the black finish over the hard chrome. I talked with Virgil Tripp, Chris Peters and Wilson today. I have decided for sure to have the hardchrome stripped. I am trying to decide on the black finish I want.

give the folks at ford's custom gun refinishing a call. they do a black hardchrome on a matte prep and would be able to answer questions.
another suggestion is robar industries. np3 the inside and rogard the exterior. cant miss with that combo.-cameron

Harold, who did the stripping of the chrome for you?

I hope they do a better job than the three pistols the local gun shop had Fords do, they looked like they used a can of krylon.

I am trying to decide which black finish. I am looking at either Armor Tuff or Tacti-Kote by Metaloy. Is anybody familiar with Tacti-Kote? I understand Chris is using it on all Wilson Tactical knives and other guns which are offered-shotguns and AR's. It does come in a matte black. Thanks in advance.

Tripp has "Cobra Coat" which is their polymer coating, and of course does hard chrome...so Virgil could strip your HC and do a black finish for you all at one shop.
