Outstanding machining work!!

I would love to hear your explanations and rational as to why you did what you did and how it has how it has worked out. This is the first time I have seen anything like this and it looks to be well thought out precisely executed and something that would work very well to remove any sand and grit that would be caught in the frame and slide. Commentary please!!

Chuck,

That's an amzing piece of machine work. Your creativity never ceases to amaze me. Is it a safe assumption that the cuts in the slide and frame are "sand cuts" to allow sand mixed with oils a place to retreat in order to prevent binding up? What parts did you use on this one? Oh... I think the mini golfball pattern on the slide stop should make it quite easy to engage manually.

HELLUVA JOB!

That is a beautiful thing. In it's own way, of course.

Prediction: I predict pistolsmiths will be getting a lot of requests for sand cuts starting in the near future.
Just a hunch.

Chuck,
A new level of innovation, for sure. I'd be interested to hear the torture test results of those reliefs.

Regardless, that is awesome work, as always.

Nice do (once again), Chuck!

Unfortunately, I see several things on this piece that are in direct violation of protocol.

I don't want to see you get into any trouble for this, so please send it to me for proper disposal.

Good God Chuck! You are the man! I wish I had a kid I could offer you. You need another wife buddy? She won't be happy about it but I'd have one hell of a nice pistol. If I could just talk you into a trade.

Yeah--

"Hey, I got a new gun for my wife the other day".

"Oh yeah? Sounds like a good trade!"
--------------------------------------------

Chuck, here's a digital pat on the back for ya....... that's an interesting and nicely done bit of work there, ol' pal.

We need to get Pat Sweeney in on this. In his last 1911 book he was sand and mud testing 1911's by putting them in a capped 5-gallon bucket with one or the other and shaking liberally. Seems they fared pretty well (but I should re-read that chapter). He literally stomped one into the ground by driving over it.

...whoa, not suggesting it should be done to this beaut!

Wow!

Love it!

Now, If I could just get my Commander to give the OK to carry one of those on our next deployment...

(poster ends his wishful thinking...)

Great work! I know a couple of guys who would like to have one of these when the "go to work!"

Chuck, keep up the good work.

That is one of the (for lack of better terms) coolest 1911's I have ever seen. Nice work sir.

What would a build like this cost a guy if you dont mind me asking?

Thanks for the kind words!
:D
I knew when I was designing this gun that it sure was not going to please everyone.
It was specifically built for those working in desert environs.

LEO’s working the southwestern border and those working overseas have indicated a preference for a tan color on weapons and gear. ‘Tactical Black’ is commonly referred to as ‘Target Designator Black’, not something they want for clothing or equipment.

The coating on the gun is ‘Cerakote’ Coyote Tan applied over a base of manganese phosphate (parkerizing). Ceracoat incorporates both ceramic and self-lubricating elements in the matrix, producing very good wear characteristics and reduced need for sand attracting oils or greases.

The Surefire X200B is coated with DuraCoat Coyote Brown. It is an ‘air-cure’ and does not require baking which would compromise the electronic and plastic components of the light.

It is attached to the gun using the excellent Dawson rail. The Dawson is very low profile enabling use with many holsters and enabling concealed carry, minus the light of course.

The ‘sand cuts’ are often misunderstood. Their purpose is not to act as evacuation channels but as sand traps or reservoirs. As the slide moves, sand/dirt that would have been trapped between the frame, slide and ejector is sheared off into the grooves. It remains there until the weapon is cleaned, but is no longer fouling the action of the slide. No part of any of the grooves is exposed to the outside environment when the gun is in battery. There is no possibility of them contributing to sand/dirt entering the weapon.

The grips are fabricated of micarta from http://www.vzgrips.com. They are near indestructible and capable of withstanding CBW decontamination procedures.

The ‘Tier One’ rear sight is my own design and fabrication. It provides for one handed slide manipulation and accomodates tritium lamps. The semi-circular flat surrounding the notch provides a sight picture free of distractions and draws the eye naturally to its center. The notch is .136” wide by .120” deep allowing a fast yet accurate sight picture. It fits the very popular Novak rear sight cut.

Thanks for the interest! It's great being able to share my work with fellow 1911 enthusiasts everywhere.

This is some awesome stuff Chuck. I have been impatiently waiting ever since you "leaked " the news a month or so ago. Truly some phenomenal machining and innovation there. The golfballing on the spring plug, slide stop, mag release, mainspring housing and slide rear really bring it all together. The finish is quite pretty too as far as spray and bakes go. I read your review on the Ceracoat on the other forum, that was helpful too.

One thing is for sure, whether I'm working in the desert or sitting at a desk I would feel well equipped with anything your hands and mind have touched. This thing rocks.

The people pleasing business is not applicable here. The design and purpose of the excellent work is obvious.
OUTSTANDING JOB!

That is really well executed. If you can share I would be very interested to read about and testing done regarding the sand cuts.

I am lucky enough to quite often see Chucks work firsthand, since we live pretty close to one another. As a result, I sometimes don't comment here on the forum, but rather directly. Couldn't resist this time though; absolutely perfectly executed work here. Someone's gonna be a lucky owner.
