Can anyone tell me what the weight in a Commander frame doen in Steel and one done in Titanium is?

I am just trying to see if it is really enough to justify the expense of the frame.

Also, now I know this isnt the same but what is the difference in a Colt Commander and a Colt LW Commander (yeah the whole guy not just the frame)...

I can't remember the exact numbers right now, but there is about 3-5 oz. difference between the two. The breakdown is something like:

Al - 3-4 oz.
Ti - 7-8 oz.
Carbon steel - 10-11 oz.
Stainless steel - 11-12 oz.

So, for a carry gun which is going to be OWB.
Have the added weight of a rail and attached light it would be wise to go with TI if you can justify the increase in price wouldn't you say?

As silly as it is I want a Commander sized 1911 with the rail.
I am in Metro Detroit and here carrying exposed is a no no (don't want to get a disturbing the peace ticket and read the riot act as some neighbor saw a gun and got scared).
I mostly walk my dog at night so I want a Commander with a rail, surefire light and Crimson Trace laser grips (seems like a more duable set up than the Surefire M6X). I play on carrying this OWB with just a light jacket or sweater over it (hence why I want to go with a Commander instead of a Govt)

So 2 questions really....

1) Would you go with TI for this and if not why not? You are getting a savings of almost 40% in the weight which is quite a bit.

2) Surefire and Crimson Trace or a M6X? Why do so many people poo poo on the M6X?

Adding the (integral) rail to a steel frame will add proportionally more overall weight than adding the rail to Ti frame (because you're adding steel rail vs. Ti rail), so yes, I would go the Ti route.

Basically the same as above. Choosing Ti over steel will increase the overall cost of the project and limit your finish options somewhat; if none of those concern you, I don't see any reason not to go with Ti.

No idea. I have X200 and am happy with its performance. I don't care for the laser sights, so can't comment there.

I had the same dilemma when I consulted with Don Williams about a pair of matched pistols. I chose steel. Tougher and more weight to dampen recoil. Of course my needs were to find the most durable material so the more expensive custom gun would last as long as possible. I do own an aluminum Paraordnance LTC which is easily replaceable when the frame wears out.

So if money not an object go with Ti. If it is like with me, go with steel.
