I notice that most of LTW smiths use Colt S80 as a base gun. Why don't they use S70? I think S70 is easier for the owner to asemble/disassemble because it does not have the firing pin safety stuff.
Would you please tell me what are the advantages in using S80 as a base gun instead of S70?
Thanks

I could be wrong but it might be because the Colt 1991 Series 80 models go for about $175 to $200 less than the Series 70's and if you are going to be replacing just about every part except the slide and frame (which is routine for a full custom build) why spend the extra $200. Also, the 1991 models are a bit easier to find than the Series 70 models.

The Series 80 parts do add a minute or two to reassembly after a detail strip of the frame but as the guys here have said, a Series 80 trigger can be tuned to just as fine a pull as a Series 70.

Though I do know of at least one of the LTW smiths who would prefer using a Colt Series 70 as a base over the Series 80's.

Either way, I think the finished product is far more a function of the man doing the work than the base gun, especially when it is a Colt.

I think for the most part, the customers supply the pistols being customized and the base gun is more their choice, than the 'smith.
