Are the front straps of these thick enough to allow for any type of treatment that is available today and how is the overall quality of these pistols?

Since I'm up early...

All of the NRM Series 70 guns I have had built have been either checkered (25 lpi) or serrated, and the front straps certainly appear to be thick enough.
I have heard that the slide-to-frame fit leaves something to be desired, but the overall quality of the guns is very good.

And, they have that little "horsey" that no one else has. 8)

I just bought a LW Commander yesterday. The fit and finish is excellent and the frame to slide fit is perfect. There were two other XSE's there and they were fit really well also. Colt can make good quality guns.

I went in to buy the new blue series 70 pistol they had in stock. Fit and finish was decent but the frame/slide fit was horrible. There was at least a 1/16" play left to right and there was almost half that in verticle play. I want one but I'll need to keep looking for one. Ted can tighten up the fit but why should we need to pay for that one a new gun? I love my Colts but that is painful to see.

They have enough thickness to have any front strap treatment you want done. I have 30 LPI done on mine, but I have friends that have had golf ball treatment done by Chuck Rogers. If he can do his Golfball treatment you can do just about anything.

I have been thinking about trying out the conamids (sp) from Ned. I have a 5 inch Colt series 70 in 9mm from about 1975 that is about to be built by a friend. Maybe Ned should do the front and back strap on this one. Good luck on which ever you choose to have done. The Golfball treatment that Chuck does is really nice and does not collect lint but gives you positive grip on your weapon if you know what I mean.

BTW, I liked the over all quality of the newer series 70 guns. The only one I can realy atest to was hand picked by Novaks shop and built into a full house gun by them.
