Is ther a concensus on the general out of box reliabilty re the newer SIG GSR pistols ( I know that there may have been sme issues early on).

Would it be a suitable base gun for any desired enhancements.
Thank you in advance for any input.

For my .02 worth of advice I would stay with an internal extractor for a base gun. I am by no means an expert but I have yet to hear of any of the new external extractor guns run without problems once you start putting some serious round counts through them.

I've built on a couple of them. Entirely average as a base gun, but with the negatives of an oddball retention system for the series 80 firing pin block and an external extractor it moves down the list pretty quickly for me.

i have had zero issues with any of my S&W 1911s with the external but have heard about lots of issues with the Sigs, most customer service related. Thats one area where I can honestly say S&W has it together.

I would grab one of the Caspian Xtreme Recon kits and use the series 80 plate that comes with the kit. I built up one of these with the good stuff on the inside and used the Stormlake barrel that they offer with the kit. Very nice nice gun. It was a real shooter and reliable. The plage eliminates the need for the safety, the external extractor was flawless and where else can you get the base parts to build a Caspian rail gun for that price. And when they ask you if that is a Sig GSR, just smile and say "kinda". I am going to build another one for sale if I can clear my workbench and get one purchased before they run out.

The extractors work great in both configurations. The external is very old Tech used by Star and others for almost a century. I like them, until you get them dirty.

I have a Sig GSR that was horrible out of the box. I had to send it back to Sig where they rebuilt the gun completely, throwing in a trigger job at no cost. Since that incident the gun has functioned flawlessly for me.
