Hi All,
For those in the know, I have the following questions about a Colt Series 80 Combat Commander modified for a Gunsight student in 1994 now owned be me :D

1) What type of finish was GS using
2) What were the normal "GSP" mods performed by the GS smiths in the 1994 time frame
3) Did GS put the last 3 numbers of the S/N on all small parts and barrel during the process (it appears to be electric stencil)

I have shot the pistol mentioned above and the fit and finish is great! I ran about 400 rounds of reloads, winchesters, and hydra-shocks at 10 yards not one failure and all in the black (not bad for a defensive pistol).

Any info on the GSP packages of that era is greatly appreciated. It also has some unique sights on it, I think the little stamp on front sight is MMC.
Cheers,
Ty Moore

I'm sure Mr. Yost can answer this one better than I can…but I’ll do my best.

I own a Gunsite pistol just as you describe which I bought when I went to Gunsite in Sep. 94 for a 250 class. Ted built this one for me. I sent him a base Colt 1991 to build off of.

Mine is finished in blue which was done in-house at the Gunsmithery. I know that there was the availability of having your Gunsite pistol shipped out for an optional finish and I believe at the time Np3 was all the rage.

Mine has the last three digits of the s/n inscribed on the small parts as well.

Mods on my gun which is based on a Colt 1991 (most of the GSP at the time were based on Springfields). Novak sights, beautiful carry dehoning, Brown beavertail, brown safety, Videki solid trigger (option of short or long), flat mainspring (this was the owners choice of flat or arched), there should be a Gunsite Raven engraved on the slide, and it came with 3 mags each with the Gunsite logo on them. Grips were a light colored walnut with "Gunsite and the Raven" engraved on them. If I recall mine was not called a GSP (the GSP was the base model and I believe that there were 3 models available)...mine was something like "Gunsite Carry pistol". Most of the Springfields that I saw in class had slide serrations on the front (mine does not).

My gun has run flawlessly over the past 10 years with probably 4000 rds through it. Only thing that has happened in that timeframe was a slide stop that broke. I replaced it with another but since the gun is 10 years old and has that cool well used look... the new replacement slide stop just looks out of place (not dehoned and just too new and blue).

Hope this helps.

Thanks RMF,
That helped a lot. Ted also sent me a IM on some of the details.

Here is a image of the commander and another one of my pistols.

As Ted had informed me they would get about 800+ pistols a year back in 1993-94 and there could be lots of variations of the standard packages. I installed a Ed Brown match barrel and busing I had in my pistol tool box and put the numbered barrel aside also found some GS grips for it. I have run 1000 rounds through it of everything I can find and not one issue....all is just as it should be. I appreciate the response on line and in email.

Regards,
Ty
