Hey all,
I posted this over on ARFCOM, but I thought I'd post it here since there are more 'smiths hanging out here. It looks like I'm finally going to be getting my custom 1911 built. It's going to be a "Spartan" (not the Mars armament "Spartan") build that's very simple, no "bling", and all business. Here's the partial spec list...

Kart barrel/bushing
Replace MIM internals
10-8 trigger
YoBo retro rear sight
Dovetailed tritium front sight
Commander style "rowel" hammer (Berryhill)
Colt "stock" grip safety relieved for Commander hammer
Replace MSH with Mars armament MSH with integral lanyard loop
Lower and flare ejection port
recontoured C&S thumb safety
Bevel magwell
Hi grip frontstrap
serrate front strap
mild dehorn
Etreat
Action Job

Now, here's the question. Which would you send out for this build, a SA GI or a Colt 70? I have two of the Colts and one Springer. Which would you send out?

Thanks
Rich

Myself I would do the Colt.
I am sure plenty of others will post here.
I really do not think you can go wrong with either one though.

Either is a great base for a gun. Since the GI is a lower cost base it maybe a more common choice. There is something about owning a custom Colt that is appealing.

As others have already said, either the Springfield or the Colt will make a fine build. Given a choice of the two, I would take the Colt every time. If for no other reason that it will tend to hold it's value a little better.

I've got guns built on both, and wouldn't trade any of them. I wish I was confronted with the decision you'll be making!

I don't have much 1911 experience, but from what I have seen, cost is the only real good reason to go with the springer. If you already own both, go with the Colt....

Then save up more money and build one on the springer :)

Hmmm.. take this for the little it's worth, knowing that I've never had an SA in the stable:

Customize the Colt.

1) It'll retain its' value better (I absolutely agree with MarkW)
2) It's hard to find a prettier custom 1911 than a Colt-based gun
3) Ya cain't make soup out of s@$#$) !

I've got one custom built on a Springfield GI, two customs built on LW Springfield Compacts, one on a Kimber Custom Classic, and two built on Colts, and for carry or duty guns, either SA or Colt (or pre series II Kimber) works fine. For beauty and a certain intangible character, I'd vote hands down for the Colts. Maybe I'm lucky, but in mine the lines on the frame and slide came out slightly better on the Colts than the SA GI. Also the forged in Brazil markings on the Springfields sort of detract from the aesthetics.
