A friend on another site just had his S70 coated by Coal Creek Armory in Knoxville, TN. I like the concept of this finish as my work gun sees a lot of abuse, and parkerizing/bluing are not up to the task.

Has anyone else used them to perform their melonite process on their gun? I did a search and didn't turn up any results. For $200 and a 3 week turn-around it sounds like a deal.

Don't know about Coal Creek other than what I have heard and it's all been good but I have several guns with the melonite finish and it's hard as nails. Perfect for a duty gun. Where I'm at, it's constant rain and exposure to salt water and fairly high humidity, but there have never been rust issues on the melonited guns. I would imagine that EGW's E-treat is a similar process.

I believe this is the same stuff that smith and wesson is using on the M&P oistol and a few of their 1911's. They claim to be through hardening I guess adding the material during the heat treating process.

I visited coal creek and they had some nice work on display.

The neatest was a shortened BHP that had about and inch removed from the slide/barrel. very cool. Nice guys too.

I live not too far from Coal Creek. They have a good 'smith working there named Shannon. One of the two local folks I will let work on my stuff. I don't know a lot about their refinishing though. I will be in Knoxville tomorrow and can check on it.

Okay, I went by and looked at examples of their Melonite on two weapons. One was a stainless Kimber Classic that the owner was carrying and said that he had been doing so for a couple of months. It showed very minimal wear with no stainless showing through, something rare in my experience with coated stainless guns. I also saw a NAA stainless revolver that also showed very minimal wear and had been pocket carried by the same owner. From talking to them, it appears that several of the employees have this finish on their carry guns. They gave me the prices of $200 for a media blasted handgun and $250 for a handgun with polished flats. Hope this helps.
