I came across this gem at Murphy's in Tucson a few weeks back. The price was good so I decided to add it to the collection. Now that I've shot it, I'd like to send it off to Yost-Bonitz for a tiny bit more work.

The previous owner(s) dropped the gun on the front sight and then cleaned up the ding with a file. The sight's still mushroomed a little and probably should be replaced. Also, the thumb safety doesn't match the overall finish of the pistol and it's got some sharp edges on it, which leads me to believe that it's not what originally left the shop.

The gun feeds hollowpoints, semi-wadcutters, and (of course) hardball. The trigger is fantastic and the gun has no slidelock issues. Overall, a great example of Cooper's Gunsite!

Nice find! I also agree that the thumb safety is most likely not original to the gun based on the ones I've seen. Also, it is unusual(at least in my experience) to see the GSP marking on the left side of the slide.

That is a good find. I found my GSP in a shop as well, and it had the two Mag Pack mags and hard plastic Hogue grips, and is marked in the right side of the slide. I'm not an expert on GSP's, but mine has a lot of stuff that I don't think was original (stippled top and rear slide, checkered frontstrap, King's ambi safety, Commander hammer and beavertail, and most of all, Novak sights with fiber optic inserts).

If I can take some decent pics I'll post them for comparison purposes.

That's pretty neat. I'd like to find one of those.

The thumb safety is definitely non original. This gun would have been built for a lefty and equipped with an ambi safety. There aren't many marked on the left side, as only lefty guns were etched in that fashion. I'd put that gun in the 1991 - 1992 range. Jeff was still test firing each gun during that time frame.

It's no 1*, but it's no slouch either

Wow! That's interesting about the "GSP" logo. Now that you mention this, I have noted that all the pictures of these guns I've seen have been on the opposite side of the slide.

Mr. Yost, can I send this in for a little additional work? I'd like to get the 1* back end treatment. I'd also like to get an ambi safety now that I know it used to have one.

The thumb safety looks like an early Kings Gunworks. The finish on those was ruff finish and blued. The safety was commercially available at that time and fit quite nicely. The front sight looks like it could be a Swenson style, Jim Houge or King.

Regards,
Jeff

This gun just made its way back home after having spent some time with Ted and gang at Yost-Bonitz. The ol' girl has been given new life! I'll get some pics up as soon as I can!

Thanks, Ted! The gun looks fantastic. A retro classic that IS a retro classic!

Now where'd I put that Galco training holster?

Tokarev,

Very Nice Find! Every-so-often I look for one, but haven't been successful.

I have a magazine article by Jeff Cooper on the original GSP.

If you would like a copy, just PM your address.

John

Here are some updated photos.

As you can see, the de-horned Wilson safety looks 100% better than the safety that was in the gun when I bought it!

That is all business. Very nice.

I love that rear sight; I had Robar put one on a Colt Commander back in the late 90's. Great sight picture.

That's better, and very nice overall.
I should print this thread and get a copy made up.
