Someone recently put up a picture of a Yost with a "round butt", which I found interesting to say the least.

Wondering if anyone can take some pics showing the differences between these styles... Ive got standard guns and a bobtail, so either one pictured with a Yost would be great!

Here is a similar treatment that C.T. Brian did for me on a Kimber:

FINALLY, someone gets my meaning!

Any chance someone can post a profile shot of Yost's butt  next to a standard butt? I'm having a hard time envisioning the difference...

Roundbutt is the way to go. Bobtail is fugly, IMO and limits your grips. Not great for big hands either.

+1 Anthony.

Sexy Butt, Ted! Especially in blue with that beautiful wood furniture. The penultimare rear end!

P.S. The rest of it don't suck much either!

I am glad to see there are many here who are as sick as I am! I am also glad to see that there are others who get bit by the butt of a 1911. I guess they have wide palms as well. I like the bobtail and magwells for the same reason, no more bite. I am glad I cannot see Ted's other butt and please, no dropping the soap in the shower. :D

Okay, now that I've snorted milk through my nose... The possibilities are endless...!

Just wanted to show off an alternative that my good friend Barry Greyson did for me, we've been calling it a "mini-bobtail" for lack of a better term. Barry started with a Springfield Ultra Compact, and fixed it all up for me. It shoots fantastic and the workmanship is outstanding. This is the gun:

Image

And this is what he did with a Smith & Alexander magwell:

Image

Barry asked Chuck Rogers to do the front strap (I love this treatment -- it works great for me). Note the slight grip reduction and the relief under the trigger guard that Barry did, too:

Image

The mini-bobtail nestles right into the crook above the heel of my hand, and it anchors the gun great. This is a hot little carry gun, and the rounded magwell really reduces the printing under a shirt.

I'm defintely going to have this done on my primary off-duty carry gun, my Kimber Compact Custom. Not only does it look great, but I'm sure that it functions even better. The 20 LPI mainspring housing on my Compact has destroyed nearly every jacket that I own!

A round butt is not often observed on slim lightweight frame

Not a problem -- but he just moved, I think. I'll find him and verify phone numbers, then post his info here. Thanks,

Here's a Colt Defender I shipped today. Not really a full custom but part of the request was to make it better as a backup/off duty gun for a Chicago-area copper who carries a 5" 1911 on duty. And part of that involved getting the many sharp edges off the outside and giving it a roundier butt. The mainspring housing on these is plast.... I mean, ah, made from a space-age, non-metallic composite. We kept that for the weight advantage, and, they do seem to hold up. Problem is, Defenders are aluminum framed guns, and the frames are clear anodized, so they're silver. Slides are stainless left bare. So, the MSH is silver. After rounding it and regrooving it, I dyed it black to match the bake-on black applied to the rest of the gun. The dye penetrates the Nylon (oops, cat's outta the bag) several thousandths, so it holds up decently.

Wow -- outstanding stuff, and I love those grips! Do you make the grips, or get them from someone else? If so, may I ask from whom? Thanks!

VZ grips by John Vanzyck, straight outta the Brownells catalog (except I dyed them to make them blacker).

Gentlemen, this is my first post, spurred on by the comments about that little springer by a fellow in my neck of the woods, Dr. Berry Greyson.
His contact info is 405-525-6882 and his email is bjg-1911-at-swbell.com. I aspire to be known as a smith someday, and I could do a lot worse than hanging around Barry's shop, looking over his shoulder.
His work on my competition pistol helped me win my class at the USPSA nationals last year, and he has a hi-cap para tested in an article in the March 2007 issue of Combat Handguns.

I only wish he lost enough patients that he'd work on guns full time.

Thanks, Mike, for posting Barry's info. I just got in touch with him a few days ago, and have been traveling ever since. Folks, Barry's an up-and-coming gunsmith with much more talent than even he knows, and some outstanding design ideas as well. What's more, he's a man of integrity and an outstanding work ethic, too. As soon as I get back home later in the week, I'll post more pictures of the Springfield. Give Barry a call, in my opinion he'd be a nice addition to the outstanding folks whose works call LTW home.

Also, as to Mike's reference to Barry's patients -- he's a longtime dentist by training. And no, your dental insurance won't cover 1911 work, I already checked... Seriously, precision is his life's work, and when applied to 1911 artistry, produces what you see here.

Specialized

P.S. Feel free to email or PM me with any questions you may have about the Springfield.
