I'm at the apex of a build and all that is left is the barrel, bushing, and finish. I ran through about 1,000 rounds before sending it out and accuracy is very good with the Springfield factory barrel.

If I'm satisfied with the barrel right now should I keep it or are there other reasons that I should replace it?

Thanks!!!

If it did 1000 with no prob and you're satisfied with accuracy-- I'd say you're good to go. I rarely find a factory barrel that gives satisfactory accuracy, or, maybe I should say, that can shoot as well as anyof the aftermarket ones-- but it does happen. And, for most folks most of the time I'm not sure that 1 1/2" groups at 25 yards versus 4" groups makes that much difference. I include myself in that group, although it's a bit of a confidence booster to know a gun can hit an Oreo at that distance should the need arise

Folks, that is particularly funny because as it happens, most of the time when Patrick and I get together, there are Oreos involved, of which he always somehow manages to get the lion's share. Proving he isn't afraid of me even when I'm armed and he's distracted

If it's accurate enough for you and you're happy with the reliability, leave it alone.

Patrick sounds like quite the bully.

Thorn,

I'm asking myself that same question. I just recently bought a new MilSpec Springer w/the NM prefix serial number which comes with the stainless one piece barrel and stainless bushing. Its simply amazing how accurate it is from the factory. My brother had an identical model that he sent to Ted Yost a couple years ago and asked at that time if he should get a better barrel. He said Yost told him that the factory one piece stainless barrels are actually quite good so he kept it, although he did put a match bushing in it.

Bully? Me? no. Just long arms, growing up in a big family and fast reflexes.

I can't answer from a gunsmith's perspective, but I can from a pretty high volume shooters-

I think if you're talking bullseye or PPC then a good custom fit barrel is a great idea.

For a carry gun, a gun you use for classes, or realistically even IDPA and IPSC if your factory barrel is giving acceptable results you're good to go.

I just ran a custom 10mm with a Kart barrel through a very challenging Scott Reitz class and I'm guessing that the shooers on the line with me using stock barrels fared no better or worse in the drills we ran. For defensive use if you can come up with a scenario where a custom fit barrel could save your life when a stock one couldn't then run!

Just my moronic two cents, and Ned will be happy to tell you that my two cents are moronic!

Brent

Ok, we'll let that slide.

I just would've been worried about "it wont last long" or some type of failure...

I'll make another range trip with it before sending it off.

Wait - I just saw this Chen/Legacy Custom Magwell if I find someone with the time I may not be sending it off to get finished just yet

Thanks for the responses

I have the impression, not any actual data, that certain barrels from Springfield are indeed quite accurate-- and it would not be the standard two-piece barrels, so, the one-piece SS you're referring to in probably a cut above. The guy who runs the SA Custom Shop, Dave Williams, has told me these barrels are as good as any. Now, how did it find its way into your MilSpec? I think that once in a while a MilSpec finds its way into the stream that for whatever reason has had a little special treatment. Looks like one found you.

Sweeney a bully? Easily, if he wanted to, but fortunately chooses not to be (but still gets more Oreos than I do :? ).
Chambers a moron? Too smart to even fake being stupid!

I have met Brent and yes I would agree with that statement.

Ned,

Best I can gather from what I've read elsewhere, SA sometimes sends frames/slides up from Brazil to the US when they are still raw forgings and not considered a "firearm". They are then completed at the US plant and have NM prefix serial numbers instead of an N prefix and are considered "Made in the USA" without any of the Brazil marks. The Mil-Specs that are built this way will have the stainless 1 peice barrel and bushing, a Patridge type front sight, and seem to be "put together" a little better. As far as I've seen there is also not a price difference.

Ned, Dave, after forgetting to bake my wife a birthday cake today while she was at work (in my defense I was busy with our kids) I needed a kind word.

Thanks!

Brent
