Excuse the commercial, but I wanted to let folks know about a tool that I've designed and am selling that will help you get a nice top registered beavertail fit, if your a 'smith or hobbyist that does his own beavertail work. Here's the scoop-

Harrison Design & Consulting BT-101 Beavertail Fitting Tool
Image

The BT-101 Beavertail Fitting Tool is designed to aid the pistolsmith or advanced hobbyist in fitting any beavertail grip safety to 1911 pattern pistols. Specifically, it serves to solidly hold the beavertail out in the “trigger blocking” position, while allowing you to use both hands to control your rotary hand grinder while shaping the top matching joint between beavertail and frame, for “top registered” beavertails.

To use, the BT-101, fit the beavertail to the frame and do all the normal shaping below the beavertail and frame that you’d normally perform. The BT-101 fits in the trigger bow track of the frame and stops against the front end of the mag well opening. Install as illustrated with the sliding pin to the rear and the notch of the body to the right.

Install the beavertail and thumb safety in the frame, along with the mainspring housing and it’s retaining pin. Turn the setscrew in until the beavertail swings all the way out until it’s solidly in the trigger blocking position. I find I can achieve this by turning the screw with my fingers, finishing with the slightest tweak of an allen wrench. Use your hand grinder to shape the frame tangs into the beavertail’s upper surface. I rough in the shape with a 60 grit sanding drum and finish the surfaces with a 320 grit flap wheel.

The BT-101 Beavertail Fitting Tool is available from Brownells, Inc. as part number 100-002-919 or from Harrison Design as part number BT-101. The tool sells for $38.95 plus $5.00 for shipping by USPS Priority Mail. The tool can be ordered and paid for through PayPal by going to http://www.paypal.com and clicking “Send Money”. My paypal account name is john@HarrisonCustom.com . Follow the on-line instructions to order the tool. I will ship within two days.

Pat on the back to John H.

A well designed tool. Just finished using mine for the first time and it's a great 'third hand assist'.

Good job, John!
