I'm a fixed sight kind of guy, but have considered getting an adjustable sight gun with Bo-Mars on it. Opinions please?

I've got pistols with Novak, Heinie, Yost and BoMar sights. I like them all but prefer fixed for carry. Fixed sights are easier on my built in sweat shield.

I have a custom colt .45 with burried BoMars that have been nicely rounded and no sharp edges. Once the sights are zeroed there really is no need to change the setting. Having said that I find my preference for a good fixed sight for durability. Heinie offers a few really good ones and you can't beat the YoBo Pro grade.

The Bomar sight picture is the best around. Nothing better for sight crankers.

I might choose a YoBo or a Yam or a Heinie but the sight picture I want is the Bomar. The Bomar does offer a chance for nice detail on sinking the sights low and fitting around the windage screw.

Not my choice for a week long class on manipulating the slide one handed by hooking the sight blade on this, that and the other thing but I can't understand even hesitating for anything but a duty/carry/game gun.

IMHO they offer the best sight picture out there. For just range use they are hard to beat with a stick.

Going one step further if they are properly dehorned I would have no problem what so ever carrying a gun with Bomars. A couple of my IDPA/USPSA guns wear them and those guns have seen more abuse than 99.9% of carry guns out there and I have not had any problems with them. In fact one of my 9MM guns has 25,000+ rounds through it and I have smacked the day lights out of the Bomars on props here and there over that time with no problems.

I love the BoMar sight picture and one of my regular carry guns has a buried BoMar. Properly dehorned and on a gun with no firing pin safety, the BoMar with a thin front sight is tough to beat.

I personally hate target sights. Fixed three-dot preferably with Tritium is my choice. Maybe I'm just used to them but I get on target faster and I'm more accurate with them.

IMO, Bomars are the only adjustable I would consider on a 1911. A proper low-mount (ideally with the so-called "pocket" cut) is attractive and functional. Some installations on Series 80 pistols are mounted too far rearward (to miss the silly plunger) and overhang the rear of the slide. These look horrid. Make sure you and your 'smith are on the same page regarding this.

Do you need to remove the series 80 stuff out of a Colt to get a proper fitting Bo-Mar? Or can it be left in with a skilled gunsmith?

Here's one done up right by Jim Garthwaite on my Delta Elite. You can see where he softened edges and corners and really sunk into the slide nicely. I have had this gun since 2004 and remain very pleased.

I think the Wilson adjustable has good aesthetics too, but I don't know anyone who has put one to the durability test to see if it can take hard use like a BoMar.
