I picked up this example of Portland area smith John Bettendorf's work today.

I saw that at "Keiths" last week and almost pulled the trigger on it. That guy does NICE work. Congrats on a fine piece, hope it shoots as good as it looks. Take Care, Mike.

It's got a Black T finish

Not sure. I believe it's all stainless. Box just says "Matt Stainless". Can anyone tell by the serial #?

Ned, I've never met him personally. According to the gang at the local gun shop, he went to school, bought equipment and hung out his shingle. Couldn't make ends meet with a family and all so he's part time. Very meticulous fella. Brings in 1 or 2 "shop" guns a year to sell on consignment.
Two years ago I bought one of his Hi-Powers and it is one of my faveraite guns to shoot. (only have 2 9mm and P7M8 and the Browning).
Here's the Browning

I'll give you a range report after the weekend.

I have this one from him:

I finally contacted him and went up to meet about 1 1/2 years ago--superb 'smith and super guy. He had a full time business till 9/11 and he said business really fell off after that time. He will still do work for LE and previous customers, but has a full time job to support his family.
My info is somewhat dated and a quick call to the # I had for him "is no longer in service"
I'll try to track down a good number for him.

I'd love his contact info too. I like your high power a lot, very clean. I especially like the narrow serrations on the slide top and the round grouping on the backstrap. I'll have to drop in at Keiths more often....

HaveBlue,

That is a very nice piece! I have found myself coming back to this thread every few days to look and absorb more details. Congratulations on a great gun.

Dave

No, no need. I know for a fact that they will not ever get any more cool used guns.

you're probably right HaveBlue, but as I live just a short 10 minute walk away and pass by there twice a day on my way to pick up donuts and coffee...

I also got 4 of these mags with the gun. They have little ball bearings in the followers. No id on the magazine. Anyone know what they are?

Nice!! That looks like a Kimber style Novak rear sight. I second the MagPac magazines.

I did manage to run him down this weekend. He stated firmly that he is out of the gunsmithing business for the forseeable future due family and raising teenage sons, but hopes to get back into it someday in the future.
