Here's one for you fans of the big lettered Series '70's. It features a rather eclectic assortment of options which all together make a very nice, simple retro-styles pistol. The owner has shown a preference for trying new things in the projects that I've done for him in the past, so after an initial evaluation, I decided to send the slide and frame to Bob Kreiger for Acc-U-Rails. The frame to slide fit was pretty loose - more so than I felt good about using the squeeze & peen tightening to cure.
I knew the owner would want a pretty pistol when it was all done, so while Bob had the big pieces, I sent all the littlest pieces (screws, pins, etc.) to Ted Yost for his gorgeous Nitre blue. He tries to keep this as an in-house thing, but I think I caught him at the right moment and he took care of me (as he always does).
Things got stagnant with pretty much everthing gone to Mi or AZ and by the time the parts got back I was knee deep into other projects. While I was waiting for a chance to start to work on this project, I sent the frame back to Ted, who made the beautiful Desert Ironwood grips, another in-house item that he was good enough to share with me. By the way - Thanks Ted!!
After due time, I got a Yo-Bo box in the mail one day with the frame and new grips and then I got busy with the rest of the work. A Kart barrel & bushing finished off the accuracy needs. A Yo-Bo retro rear sight and a SDM dovetail front with my gold bead took care of the aiming equipment. A set of 20 lpi front strap serrations and an ED Brown arched main spring housing help give the traction needed. A recessed lanyard mount and beveled mag well finish up the bottom end. Ignition in handled by a EMC wide spur hammer that is reshaped enough to get rid of hammer pinch. An EGW sear & Grieder trigger complete the ignition system. A reshaped King's thumb safety handles that control. The ejection port was lowered enough to ensure consistent ejection and all the edges and corners were beveled or rounded. The finish consisted of matte rounds and hand polishing the flats to 2000 grit then blueing by Glenrock Bluing.
Enough noise, enjoy the pics! :D

I can't really descirbe how much I like this pistol. I love retro style Colts. There is just something to them. This has to be about the nicest retro style Colt I have seen.

That's sure a classy one. Retro down to the hammer, too.
I doubt there's anyone alive who wouldn't be extremely proud of owning that one.

I have never been a big fan of retro Colts. I have appreciated the nice retro's I have seen on LTW, just never wanted wanted one, until now.

In addition to being a drop dead beauty this one has enough of the "stuff" to suit me. I would be more than proud to own this one.

I wonder if that '47 Super I have been looking at is still available?

John,

That's a great looking piece of work. Simple but effective, and that same configuration is slowly but surely becoming my taste in a 1911. Great job.

John,
It’s great to see a real quality retro piece like that. Excellent work! Defiantly out of the ordinary and extraordinarily done!

It shoots as good as it looks guys. I took it to the range today and put about 150 through it and it ran like a champ. It has an incredible trigger job that is very crisp. I am fortunate enough to have several customs from John and they all are amazingly reliable and accurate. John has always been a pleasure to deal with over the years. He wouldn't let me do anything to this blaster that you wouldn't see on an older gun. The idea for this custom actually came from my wanting something similar to a Vickers Retro that Smooth One has that I was able to shoot a while back. I have had the Colt for a few years and figured it would be the perfect platform for the project. M1911ORG shows the serial number to be from 1972 which makes it even cooler since it actually does have some age to it. The stocks are really something special too and I have been a fan of nitre blue ever since seeing some of Ted's works of art at the LTW booth several years ago. John you truly outdid yourself on this one man. Thank you very much!

John,

Very cool detail. I like how you matched the wide spur to the grip safety tang and blended the front sight completely into the round. Cool touches.

Best,

Ray

John,
Another great looking pistol! No wonder why your wait list has now jumped to 24 months. Looking at these makes it hard to resist getting another 1911 just to have you work on another for me!

Nice job Mr. Harrison. It really is a retro. I carried one very similar early in my LE career as a "deppity shurf". It was built by a good friend/gunsmith who's now a teacher..........go figure.

This is a classy looking gun that belongs in a museum under glass and on a turntable. I'm surprised the owner actually shot it.

Simple ageless elegance John; like Audrey Hepburn in a little black dress or Gale Sayers breakin one.
